. CHAPTER 5 — Vivian’s Perfect Mask Cracks

Vivian reached for the locket, but Nathaniel closed his fist around it.

“That belongs to my family,” he said.

“It belonged,” Vivian corrected quickly. “Past tense. Nathaniel, grief can make people see patterns that are not there.”

Mara slid off the piano bench. She stood barefoot on the marble again, smaller than before. “I didn’t steal it. Grandma Ruth said it was mine.”

Nathaniel crouched so his face was level with hers. The movement shocked the room more than any speech. Men like him did not kneel in public. They were knelt before.

“I believe you,” he said.

Mara’s mouth trembled.

Vivian looked around and realized the cameras were still recording. The charity gala’s official livestream, meant to show donations and speeches, had captured every laugh, every insult, every word.

“Turn those cameras off,” she hissed.

No one moved.

Nathaniel stood. “Where is Ruth now?”

“In a clinic on Mercer Street,” Mara said. “She told me not to tell strangers, but you look…” She hesitated, searching for a child’s word for grief. “You look like you lost something too.”

Nathaniel pressed the locket to his chest.

Vivian’s voice sharpened. “This is ridiculous. A locket proves nothing. A song proves nothing. A hungry child will say anything.”

Mrs. Alden, usually quiet, stepped forward. “Then why are you shaking, Vivian?”

Every eye turned.

Vivian’s hand tightened around her champagne stem until the liquid trembled.

Nathaniel noticed something else then. On Mara’s left wrist was a faint pale mark shaped like a crescent. Grace had been born with one just beneath the thumb. Elise used to kiss it and call it the moon that followed their daughter home.

He reached for Mara’s wrist but stopped before touching her. “May I see?”

Mara slowly raised her hand.

The mark was there.

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

Seven years of funerals, investigators, sleepless nights, and silent birthdays collapsed inside him. When he opened his eyes, they were wet.

Vivian stepped back.

At that exact moment, the ballroom doors opened, and two men from Nathaniel’s private security team entered. Behind them came a woman in a plain gray coat, breathing hard, clutching a folder to her chest.

Mara cried out, “Grandma Ruth!”
