. CHAPTER 2 — The Wife No One Respected

For seven years, Clara had been introduced as Adrian’s wife, never as herself. At dinners, he corrected her stories. At board meetings, he called her “quiet.” At charity events, he placed her three seats away from him as if affection might damage his image. He told everyone she preferred to stay out of business. He told everyone she was fragile. He told everyone she owed her place in society to him.
Clara had let him.
Not because she was weak, but because she was tired. Tired from raising his public image. Tired from repairing every relationship he damaged. Tired from signing anonymous checks to foundations that later praised Adrian as their champion. She had watched him accept awards bought by her late mother’s estate and smile as if generosity had been born in his own chest.
Tonight’s gala was supposed to be the last one. Clara had planned to leave after the donor announcement, quietly and legally. The papers were already prepared. The trust accounts were frozen. The auditors had already begun reviewing Adrian’s “charity expenses,” including hotels, jewelry, and private flights that had nothing to do with charity and everything to do with Vanessa Pierce.
But Adrian did not know that.
He only knew the old version of Clara: silent, careful, obedient.
So when he forced her against the table, he did it confidently. He believed humiliation was a language she had learned to accept.
“Look at you,” he said, loud enough now for nearby guests to hear. “You can’t even stand at a formal event without making a scene.”
Clara pushed herself up on trembling arms. Her dress had wrinkled at the waist. A red mark bloomed along her wrist where his fingers had been. Her eyes watered, but she refused to let the tears fall.
Vanessa finally stepped closer. “Adrian, maybe don’t be too harsh,” she said softly, the tone of a woman pretending mercy after lighting the fire.
Clara looked at her. “You knew.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared for one second.
Adrian’s expression darkened. “Do not speak to her.”
That was when Clara understood. He was not protecting Vanessa from embarrassment. He was protecting the life he had built with her using Clara’s money, Clara’s name, Clara’s family legacy.

And he had just made one mistake.
He did it in front of cameras.
