. CHAPTER 3 — The Mistress in Silver

Vanessa Pierce had arrived that evening like she owned the charity hall. Her silver dress glittered, her diamond bracelet flashed, and every donor greeted her with the cautious warmth reserved for women who could open or close doors with one phone call. She was the daughter of a media investor, famous for funding causes only after cameras arrived.

Adrian had been careful for months, but not careful enough. Clara had found the hotel receipts first. Then the jewelry invoice. Then the townhouse lease in Vanessa’s name paid through a consulting company tied to the Whitmore Foundation. Every discovery had felt less like shock and more like confirmation of a pain she had already been living.

Still, seeing Vanessa stand behind him tonight, calm and beautiful while Clara struggled to sit up, made something in Clara’s chest go cold.

“Tell her to apologize,” Vanessa murmured.

Adrian turned sharply toward Clara. “You heard her.”

The guests were watching now. Some with pity. Some with hunger. Public cruelty always drew an audience faster than charity.

Clara placed one hand on the table and slowly rose. Her knees shook, but her voice did not. “I will not apologize for your affair.”

The silence struck harder than the shove.

Vanessa’s face drained of color. Adrian froze, then laughed once, too loudly. “My wife is emotional. She’s been under stress.”

“No,” Clara said. “I’ve been under surveillance. By accountants. By attorneys. By people who know exactly where the money went.”

Adrian stepped closer, eyes blazing. “Stop talking.”

“You brought her here,” Clara continued, “to a gala funded by my mother’s trust. You seated her beside the donors my family cultivated for thirty years. You spent foundation funds on her, and then you dragged me across a table because you were afraid the room would see what you are.”

Adrian grabbed her arm again.

This time, several guests stood.

But the sound that changed the room did not come from them.

It came from the far end of the hall: the deep groan of the double doors opening.

Every head turned.

Three security men entered first. Behind them walked an older man in a navy suit, silver-haired, straight-backed, his expression carved from controlled fury.

May you like

Clara’s breath broke.

“Dad,” she whispered.
