. CHAPTER 5 — The Room Where Truth Waited

The security room sat behind the garage, a narrow space lined with screens that most people forgot existed. To Vivian, it had always been a room for guards and deliveries. To Daniel, it was the place where the mansion kept its memory.

A young night guard stood when Daniel entered.

“Sir, I was told to stay out of this,” he said nervously.

“By whom?”

The guard swallowed. “Mrs. Blackwood.”

Daniel did not answer. He walked to the largest monitor. “Pull the east staff corridor. Today. Three p.m. to six.”

Vivian followed them in, her robe whispering around her ankles. “Daniel, this is absurd. You’re humiliating me over a maid.”

“No,” Daniel said without turning. “I’m checking facts.”

Her face hardened. “Facts are in the police report.”

“Not yet.”

The guard typed quickly. Grainy black-and-white footage appeared on the screen: the empty staff corridor, coats hanging, light flickering near the laundry door. Daniel leaned forward.

At 4:17 p.m., Sofia passed through carrying towels. She did not touch the coats.

At 4:39 p.m., Vivian appeared.

The room went utterly still.

On the monitor, Vivian stood alone in the corridor. She looked left, then right. She opened Sofia’s coat pocket and slipped something inside.

Daniel’s hand curled into a fist.

The guard whispered, “Oh my God.”

Vivian’s breath caught, but she recovered fast. “That could be anything. I was checking—”

“Rewind,” Daniel said.

The guard did. Vivian’s image repeated: silk robe, necklace bundle, Sofia’s coat.

“Zoom.”

The frame sharpened enough to show the flash of diamonds.

Daniel turned slowly.

Vivian’s beauty had not changed, but all at once it looked like a mask held up by shaking hands.

“You planted it,” he said.

She lifted her chin. “You don’t understand what she heard.”

That was the wrong answer.

Daniel’s voice dropped. “What did she hear, Vivian?”

Vivian’s eyes flicked toward the screens, then away.

The guard, pale now, clicked another camera angle from the private study hallway. There was Vivian again, two nights earlier, standing with a man Daniel recognized from the foundation’s investment committee. Too close. Too secretive. Papers spread across Daniel’s desk.

On one screen, Vivian planted the necklace.

On another, Vivian signed documents she had no authority to touch.

The mansion, for once, did not belong to her charm.

It belonged to evidence.

Daniel walked out without another word.

Vivian ran after him.

“Daniel, wait.”

He did not wait.
