. CHAPTER 1 — The Push

Caleb Rivas saw the shadow before he understood it.

It slid across the glass face of Kober Tower like a dark hand, broken by reflections of taxis, clouds, and office lights. For one impossible second, everyone else on the sidewalk kept moving as if the city had not already chosen its next tragedy. A courier checked his phone. A businessman cursed into an earbud. Two women stood beneath the building canopy, laughing at something private.

Then Caleb heard the sound.

A metallic groan.

Not loud. Not dramatic. Just a thin, exhausted scream from high above, the kind of sound most people mistake for traffic until it is too late.

His head snapped up. Thirty floors above, a gray service unit tilted out from its bracket. It should have been bolted flat against the wall. Instead, it shuddered, leaned, and dropped an inch.

Caleb’s breath left his chest.

“Move!” he shouted.

The blonde young woman under the awning turned, startled. Beside her, an older woman clutched a patterned handbag and squinted at him as if he were another sidewalk stranger asking for money.

They did not move.

The metal shrieked again. Louder this time.

Caleb ran.

His sneakers slammed the pavement. People jumped out of his path. The young woman’s smile vanished as he charged straight toward her. Her first instinct was fear. She stepped back, but not far enough.

“Get away from me!” she cried.

Caleb did not have time to explain. He lowered his shoulder, grabbed both women by their arms, and shoved them with all the force he had.

They fell sideways, screaming.

The older woman hit her knees. The younger woman stumbled hard against a planter, her phone skidding across the pavement. Gasps exploded from every direction. A security guard at the revolving door reached for his radio.

For half a second, it looked like Caleb had attacked two innocent women in broad daylight.

Then the sky broke open.

A huge air-conditioning unit tore free from the glass tower, spinning as it fell. Its steel casing flashed in the afternoon light. Cables snapped behind it like black whips.

Caleb threw himself backward.

The unit hit the sidewalk exactly where the women had been standing.

Concrete burst upward. Dust swallowed the entrance. The crash was so violent every car alarm on the block began screaming at once.

When the cloud cleared, there was a crater in the pavement.

And Caleb, shaking and breathless, was still staring at the two women he had just saved.
