. CHAPTER 6 — Caleb’s Brother

His brother’s name was Mateo.

Caleb had not said it out loud at a work site in six years. Names made the dead too present. Dates could be managed. Reports could be filed. Testimony could be given. But names pulled a chair up beside you and refused to leave.

Mateo had been twenty-nine, loud, funny, newly married, and convinced every bad day could be fixed with tacos and music. He worked construction because their father had, and because he liked building things that outlasted him.

The crane that killed him had been marked defective by three workers and two subcontractors. Management delayed the repair to avoid shutting down a profitable site. When the cable snapped, the official statement called it a tragic accident.

Caleb called it murder wearing a hard hat.

He spent years learning codes, load paths, bracket systems, inspection law. He became the kind of man who noticed loose bolts from across a street because once, no one with power had wanted to notice them.

Emily listened as Caleb told Detective Lorne the short version. He did not ask for sympathy. He spoke like every word was evidence.

Whitmore interrupted. “This is emotional manipulation.”

Detective Lorne looked at him. “It is motive for why he paid attention. Not evidence against him.”

Whitmore’s mouth shut.

A building engineer finally emerged from inside Kober Tower, pale and sweating. He carried a folder and avoided Whitmore’s eyes.

“Detective,” he said, “you should see this.”

Whitmore snapped, “Daniel.”

The engineer flinched.

Detective Lorne took the folder. Emily saw printed maintenance requests, inspection notes, photographs. Some pages had red stamps. Some had signatures.

Caleb recognized one photo immediately. It was his.

“They printed my warning,” he said.

Daniel swallowed. “It was added to the emergency review packet yesterday.”

“And?” Detective Lorne asked.

Daniel’s hands shook. “Mr. Whitmore ordered the repair postponed until after the investor tour.”

The city seemed to tilt.

Emily turned on Whitmore. “There was an investor tour?”

Whitmore’s face hardened. “Any statement from this employee is unauthorized.”

Daniel looked down. “You said scaffolding outside the entrance would damage the building image.”

The broken unit smoked faintly in the crater behind them.

Emily’s mother began to cry.

Caleb did not move. He had heard confessions before. They never brought anyone back.

But sometimes, they stopped the next name from being added to the list.
