. CHAPTER 8 — Lily Wakes Up

Lily woke on the third morning, confused and thirsty, with three stuffed animals tucked beside her and two terrified parents pretending not to look terrified. Ava cried before she could stop herself. Noah turned away and pressed his fist against his mouth.

“Mom?” Lily whispered.

Ava took her hand carefully. “I’m here, baby.”

Lily’s eyes moved around the room. “Is Grandma mad?”

Ava’s heart cracked. Even after everything, Lily’s first instinct was to measure the danger by Diane’s mood.

“No,” Noah said softly. “Grandma can’t come here.”

Lily looked at him. “She said you wouldn’t believe me.”

Ava leaned closer. “Believe you about what?”

Lily swallowed. “The papers.”

The room went still.

Lily told them in pieces, the way children reveal terror: not in order, not with legal clarity, but with perfect truth. Diane had been on the phone with a man about selling the house. She had said Ava would be “removed from the equation.” Lily had asked what that meant. Diane had smiled and said grown-up words were not for little girls.

Then Lily had seen Diane practicing Ava’s signature.

“She used your blue pen,” Lily said. “The one from the hospital.”

Noah called the detective. Ava found the pen missing from her work bag. In Diane’s hotel room, police found forged documents: a petition, a medical leave form, and a letter supposedly written by Ava admitting she was no longer fit to care for Lily.

At the bottom of the stack was a real estate contract.

The buyer’s name made Ava sit down.

Diane had not been acting alone.

Lily squeezed Ava’s fingers. “Did I do something bad?”

May you like

Ava climbed carefully onto the edge of the hospital bed and kissed her forehead. “No, baby. You told the truth. That is the bravest thing in the world.”

Lily closed her eyes, exhausted again. This time, when she slept, Ava did not let go.
