. CHAPTER 10 — The File in the Attic
Months later, Lily returned to school with a purple backpack, a new therapist, and a habit of sleeping with the hallway light on. Healing did not arrive like a parade. It came in small, stubborn pieces: Lily laughing at a cartoon, Ava finishing a shift without checking her phone every four minutes, Noah making pancakes in Ava’s kitchen because no one had asked him to leave.
Diane accepted a plea deal that still sent her to prison. Richard Vale resigned from the hospital board before he could be removed, which did not save him from fraud charges or the civil suit Noah filed with a smile Ava had never seen before.
Ava sold nothing. She painted Lily’s room yellow.
The last twist came while cleaning the attic. Ava found a box of her late father’s old records, sealed beneath Christmas ornaments. Inside was a hospital file from when Ava was six years old. She had been brought in one winter night, barely conscious, while Diane told doctors the same thing she had told Ava about Lily.
She’s being fussy.
Ava read the file three times. Then she found another: her baby brother, Daniel, who had died before Ava was old enough to understand grief. The notes described suspicious symptoms, dismissed because Diane had insisted he was simply “difficult.”
Ava sat on the attic floor until Noah found her.
“What is it?” he asked.
She handed him the file.
The past opened like a door that had been locked for thirty years.
Diane had not become dangerous.
She had finally been caught.
At the next hearing, Ava submitted the files to investigators. Outside the courthouse, Lily squeezed her hand and asked if monsters always lose.
Ava looked at her daughter, alive beneath the morning sun, and answered honestly.
