CHAPTER 2 — THE CONFRONTATION

His wife turned in shock.
"You're back?"
But he didn't answer.
Not immediately.
He slowly walked toward his mother.
His eyes taking in every detail.
The wet clothes.
The trembling hands.
The silence.
Then he looked at his wife.
"Say that again."
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
She immediately tried to recover.
"You don't understand—"
"No."
He cut her off.
"I understand perfectly."
The room fell silent.
His mother lowered her head.
His wife suddenly looked uncertain.
For the first time, the confidence that had always protected her began to crack.
