. CHAPTER 4 — The Camera Above the Pantry

Ryan had installed the cameras after a break-in scare two years earlier. Diana had hated them from the beginning. She said cameras made a home feel like a gas station. Marissa said they were “bad optics” when charity guests visited. Claire had been the only one who forgot they existed.
But Ryan never forgot anything that protected his family.
He walked past the island.
Marissa moved first, fast and nervous, trying to slip her phone into her pocket. Ryan caught the motion.
“Leave it on the counter.”
“It’s my phone.”
“It’s evidence.”
Her face flushed. “You can’t—”
“I can, actually.” His voice was quiet. “Especially if you used it to stage a false record inside my home.”
Diana laughed sharply. “Listen to yourself. You sound unhinged.”
Ryan looked at her. “No. I sound late.”
That stopped Claire’s breathing for one second. He heard it, the way her breath caught on the word late, because late was what he had been for months. Late to notice her loneliness. Late to answer when his mother’s comments made her shrink. Late to ask why Claire stopped singing to Lily at breakfast. Late to ask why the woman he married had started apologizing before speaking.
He moved to the security panel near the refrigerator.
Diana stepped from behind the island. “Ryan, don’t embarrass yourself.”
Marissa whispered, “Diana.”
Ryan entered the code.
The monitor lit up.
For a moment, all it showed was the live view of the kitchen: burned pan, island, two women in white, Claire with Lily pressed to her chest, and Ryan standing between them like the last door in a burning house.
Then he opened the timeline.
7:42 p.m.
The recording showed Claire in the kitchen, holding Lily on one hip while warming milk. Diana entered with Marissa behind her. No sound at first, only motion. Diana took the bottle from Claire. Claire reached for it. Marissa stepped between them.
Ryan clicked audio.
Diana’s voice filled the kitchen from the speaker.
“She is too attached to you. You’ve made her weak.”
Claire’s recorded voice answered, frightened. “She’s hungry. Please give me the bottle.”
Marissa laughed. “This is exactly why Ryan needs professionals.”
On the recording, Diana carried the bottle to the stove, poured milk into the saucepan, and turned the burner too high.
Claire tried to move around her.
Marissa grabbed Claire’s wrist.
In the present, Claire unconsciously covered that wrist with her sleeve.
Ryan kept watching.
The recording showed Diana pushing Claire and Lily toward the laundry hallway. Claire stumbled but kept Lily upright. Diana shut the door. Marissa slid a chair under the handle.
Then both women returned to the island.
Diana faced the camera without knowing it and said, “Let it burn. He needs to smell failure when he comes home.”

No one moved.
Even the smoke seemed to freeze.
