. CHAPTER 8 — The Ride Away

Claire expected the car to feel like escape.

Instead, it felt like a question.

She sat in the back seat with Lily asleep across her lap, the child’s fingers still twisted in the fabric of her cardigan. Ryan sat beside them, leaving space between his knee and hers, as if he knew space was the first gift he could offer. Outside, the city slid by in streaks of wet light. Behind them, the Whitlock mansion disappeared behind iron gates and police headlights.

No one spoke for ten minutes.

Then Ryan said, “I believed you were tired.”

Claire looked out the window.

“I knew Mom was hard on you,” he continued. “I told myself it was adjustment. Class tension. Grief. Habit. I used words that made it smaller because I didn’t want to see how large it was.”

Lily stirred. Claire smoothed her hair.

Ryan’s voice lowered. “Did she hurt you before tonight?”

Claire did not answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

His face changed. Not with anger this time, but grief. The kind that arrives after anger, when the body realizes rage cannot undo anything.

“Claire.”

“She never hit me,” Claire said. “Not like tonight. She didn’t need to. She cut little pieces off every day. She changed Lily’s schedule and blamed me. Told staff not to help because I needed to ‘earn motherhood.’ Invited Marissa when you traveled, so they could discuss how unstable I seemed. She told me if I left, you would get custody because no judge gives a child to a woman with no income and panic attacks.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I had panic attacks because of her,” Claire whispered.

He covered his face with one hand. For a man who could shout a boardroom silent, he looked suddenly young and ruined.

The car stopped at a private residence near the lake, a smaller house Ryan had bought years earlier and rarely used. No portraits. No marble staircase. No staff waiting with judgment. Just warm porch lights and rain on the roof.

At the door, Claire hesitated.

Ryan unlocked it and stepped aside. “You and Lily stay here. I’ll sleep in the guest house if that feels better.”

She looked at him then.

The old Ryan would have said “our house” and meant comfort. Tonight he said “you and Lily” and meant choice.

Claire carried Lily inside.

The kitchen smelled faintly of lemon soap, nothing burned. Ryan stood at the threshold until Claire turned back.

May you like

“You can come in,” she said.

He entered slowly, like a man being allowed into a church after nearly burning it down.
