● CHAPTER 5: The Husband Who Stopped Being a Son

Margaret laughed once, softly, as if Daniel had embarrassed himself.

"Don't use that tone with me."

Daniel removed his jacket and covered Emma with it. His hands shook only when they touched her; when he stood, they went still.

"Call 911," he said to Lena.

The housekeeper moved at once.

"Cancel that," Margaret snapped.

Lena froze.

Daniel turned.

"If anyone stops that call," he said, his voice low, "they will answer to me."

It was the first time the staff had ever heard Daniel sound like the man who ran Blackwell Holdings instead of the son who endured Blackwell cruelty for the sake of peace. Lena lifted the phone again.

Margaret's face tightened. "You are humiliating this family."

Daniel stared at her. "You pushed my pregnant wife down the stairs."

"I did no such thing."

"There are cameras in the foyer."

Margaret smiled again, but it flickered. "The foyer camera has been under maintenance since last week."

Daniel looked at the black glass dome near the ceiling. Then back at her.

"Yes," he said. "I know."

For the first time, Margaret's confidence faltered.

She recovered quickly. "Daniel, think. Think before you accuse your own mother because some little orphan cried on the floor."

The word orphan changed the temperature in the room.

Emma heard it. Even through pain, she heard it. Her eyes opened, and Daniel saw the humiliation cross her face. Not because the word was new. Because after everything, after marriage, after pregnancy, after months of trying to be gentle, Margaret still reached for the oldest wound.

Daniel stepped toward the staircase.

"Say that again," he said.

Margaret lifted her chin. "She is an orphan. A manipulative little nobody who trapped you with a baby and a sob story."

Daniel looked at his mother for a long moment.

Then he said the sentence that made the whole foyer go silent.

"You don't even know her real name."

Margaret blinked.

Emma's fingers tightened on the marble.

Daniel continued, his voice steady now. "You spent two years trying to investigate my wife. You found school records, foster records, employment records. You found exactly what she let the world see."

Margaret's lips parted. "What nonsense is this?"

"Her name is not Emma Reed."

Emma closed her eyes.

Not from shame. From the unbearable weight of the secret finally leaving the room.

"Her legal name," Daniel said, "is Evelyn Hart."

A servant gasped.

Margaret's face hardened. "Hart means nothing."

"It will."

Daniel looked toward the front doors where, beyond the rain, sirens began to rise faintly in the distance.

"Evelyn Hart is the only surviving daughter of Caroline Hart, the woman your family buried in a legal settlement twenty-eight years ago. She is the majority beneficiary of the Hart Trust. She owns the land this mansion stands on. She owns the medical foundation you have been using for tax shelters. And for the last eight months, she has been cooperating with the state attorney general."

Margaret stared as if the words were in a language she had never learned.

Daniel took one more step.

"The woman you just pushed down the stairs is not a nobody."

May you like

His voice broke for the first time.

"She is the one person who could have ended you quietly. And now you made it public."
