● CHAPTER 8: The Hospital Room

Emma did not remember the ambulance ride clearly.
She remembered Daniel's hand wrapped around hers. She remembered a paramedic telling her to keep breathing. She remembered rain streaking the window above her and thinking how beautiful the world could look while falling apart.
At the hospital, everything became bright.
White lights. Blue gloves. Soft voices with sharp instructions. A monitor searching for the baby's heartbeat.
That was the sound Daniel waited for.
When it came—fast, steady, alive—he broke.
He turned away from the bed and covered his face with both hands. Not because he did not want Emma to see him cry, but because relief can be as violent as fear.
"Daniel," Emma whispered.
He came back instantly.
"I'm here."
"The baby?"
"Strong," he said, though his voice shook. "Our baby is strong."
A doctor explained the injuries. Bruising. A cheek cut. A sprained wrist. A hairline fracture in the shoulder. Painful, frightening, but survivable. They would monitor the pregnancy closely. There were risks, but no immediate sign the baby was in distress.
Emma closed her eyes, and tears slipped into her hair.
Daniel kissed her knuckles.
"I'm sorry," he said.
She looked at him. "Don't."
"I left you there."
"You came back."
"Too late."
"Daniel."
He could not meet her eyes.
Emma reached with her good hand and touched his jaw. "Your mother did this. Not you."
Those words should have comforted him. Instead, they made him feel the full weight of every time he had asked Emma to be patient, every dinner he had attended hoping civility could become love, every insult he had softened because he was afraid to choose between the woman who raised him and the woman who healed him.
A knock came at the door.
Nathan entered with a folder.
"She's been taken in for questioning," he said. "The footage is secured. The attorney general's office is moving faster than expected."
Emma sighed. "I didn't want her arrested tonight."
Daniel's expression hardened. "She pushed you down the stairs."
"I know."
"She could have killed you."
Emma looked down at her belly. "I know."
Nathan stepped closer. "Evelyn, there is something else."
Daniel lifted his head.
"The trust board convened emergency session. Given Margaret's actions and the existing evidence of financial misconduct, they voted to freeze all accounts tied to Blackwell charitable subsidiaries. The mansion staff payroll will continue through the Hart Trust. Margaret's personal access is suspended."
Emma stared at him. "Tonight?"
"Tonight."
For months, justice had been an abstract thing, a future paper, a hearing date, a sealed filing. Now it was happening while Emma lay in a hospital bed with Daniel's jacket still folded at her feet.
She felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
"What happens to Daniel?" she asked.
Nathan looked at him. "He cooperated fully. His position is protected."
Emma nodded, then closed her eyes.
Daniel leaned closer. "What do you need?"
She answered without opening her eyes.
"I need our child to grow up in a house where no one is afraid."
May you like
Daniel held her hand.
"Then we start there."
