. CHAPTER 1 — The Woman in the Blue Gown

The chandelier above the Voss estate ballroom burned like a frozen storm of diamonds. Under it, billionaires, senators, fashion editors, and private bankers moved carefully across the marble floor, pretending not to stare at the woman sitting alone near the gold-trimmed chair.

Evelyn Hart had not spoken since she entered.

She wore a deep blue velvet gown embroidered with silver across the chest and sleeves. It was elegant, but old-fashioned beside the sharp tuxedos and shimmering cocktail dresses around her. Her dark hair fell straight over one shoulder. Her hands rested in her lap as if she were holding herself together by force.

Across the room, Julian Voss laughed loudly.

At thirty-five, Julian was the public face of Voss Global, the billionaire CEO everyone called untouchable. He had inherited the name, the company, the estate, and the kind of confidence that made cruelty look like leadership to people who wanted his money. Beside him stood Bianca Vale, his girlfriend, in a silver-gold dress that caught every flash of the photographers’ cameras.

Bianca leaned close to Julian and whispered something while pointing toward Evelyn.

Julian’s smile thinned.

He crossed the room with Bianca hooked around his arm, moving like a man who expected the floor itself to make way for him. The guests sensed trouble before he reached the chair. Conversations softened. Glasses paused halfway to mouths.

“Evelyn,” Julian said, his voice polished enough to sound kind from far away. “I didn’t realize anyone had invited you to sit with the family.”

Evelyn looked up slowly. Her expression did not change.

Bianca giggled. “Maybe she thought the chair came with the dress.”

A few people laughed because Julian laughed first.

Evelyn’s fingers pressed together once, then relaxed.

Julian bent slightly toward her, still smiling. “Tonight is for investors, partners, and people who built something. Not for silent ornaments living off my grandfather’s charity.”

The word charity landed harder than a slap.

Evelyn said nothing.

That silence seemed to annoy him more than tears would have. Julian straightened, raising his voice just enough for the nearest guests to hear.

“Security will find you somewhere appropriate to wait. The staff corridor, perhaps.”

Only then did Evelyn’s eyes lift past him, toward the tall double doors at the end of the ballroom.

Someone had arrived.

And the leather folder in his hand was about to ruin everything.
