. CHAPTER 5 — Fired in Front of Everyone

No one applauded.
The room was too stunned for that.
Evelyn finished the final curve of her name, set down the pen, and let Marcus lift the document. He examined the signature, then looked toward the board members by the windows.
“By authority of the Voss Family Trust and pursuant to the emergency governance clause, Julian Voss is removed as CEO effective immediately,” Marcus announced. “All executive access is suspended. All pending transactions are frozen.”
Bianca’s hand flew from Julian’s arm.
That small movement wounded him more than the words. She had clung to him when he owned the room. Now that the room had shifted, she suddenly needed both hands for herself.
Julian stared at Evelyn. “You can’t do this.”
“I already did,” she said.
His eyes moved around the ballroom, searching for loyalty he had purchased and mistaken for devotion. Edmund Price looked at the floor. Helen Ward had gone pale. The investment partners avoided his gaze entirely.
“Tell her,” Julian snapped at Marcus. “Tell her what happens when investors panic.”
Marcus closed the folder. “Investors will receive a controlled statement in eight minutes. The forensic team already has your office records. Your personal accounts are under review where they intersect with company assets.”
Bianca whispered, “Julian?”
He turned on her. “Be quiet.”
The cruelty in his voice, suddenly aimed at her, revealed what Evelyn had always known: men like Julian did not love people. They used mirrors. When a mirror stopped reflecting power, they smashed it.
Two security officers entered, but not the ones Julian had summoned for Evelyn.
These men wore dark suits and earpieces from the trust’s private security team. They stopped beside Marcus and waited.
Julian laughed once, sharp and ugly. “You’re going to have me removed from my own estate?”
Evelyn stepped closer, keeping her voice low enough that the quiet made everyone lean in.
“You tried to remove widows from apartments, workers from pensions, children from hospital funding, and Daniel from the truth. So yes, Julian. I’m removing you from a chair.”
His breath shook.
For the first time in his life, Julian Voss looked smaller than his name.
May you like
Security did not touch him. They did not need to. They simply opened a path toward the door.
And the billionaire CEO who had ordered Evelyn to the staff corridor walked out under the eyes of every person he had tried to impress.
