. CHAPTER 2 — The Splash No One Could Pretend Away

For one impossible second, the terrace stayed silent.

Then Lily screamed beneath the splash.

The sound was cut short by water closing over her head. Her white dress ballooned around her as she sank, tiny arms fighting through the petals. Vivian stepped back, both hands lifted in a performance of shock.

“Oh my God,” she cried. “She slipped!”

But the people nearest the pool had seen too much.

A young waiter froze with a tray in his hands. One guest covered her mouth. Another lowered her champagne glass, face pale. Yet no one moved fast enough. The pool was deeper near the terrace edge, designed for beauty, not children. Lily surfaced once, coughing and flailing, then disappeared again under the blue.

Inside the mansion, Marcus heard the first scream through the glass doors.

It was not a scream of surprise. It was a sound he had known once before, in a hospital hallway, when the doctors told him Amelia had not survived the crash.

His phone dropped from his hand.

Marcus ran.

By the time he reached the terrace, Vivian was pointing at the water. Her voice shook with practiced panic. “She fell! Marcus, she fell!”

He did not answer. He tore off his cream blazer and dove without hesitation.

The guests saw him break the water like a man entering war. He reached Lily beneath the surface, one arm hooking around her waist, the other pushing them upward. When they emerged, Lily was limp against his chest, her wet hair pasted to her cheeks.

“Lily!” Marcus shouted. “Sweetheart, look at me!”

He carried her to the edge, coughing, soaked, terrified in a way that made even the richest people on that terrace look poor. The waiter finally moved, dropping towels beside him. Marcus laid Lily gently on the stone, tilted her head, and listened.

A shallow cough broke from her.

Marcus nearly collapsed with relief.

Lily’s eyes fluttered open. She clutched his shirt with a shaking hand and whispered, “Daddy… I didn’t fall.”

Every face turned toward Vivian.

Vivian’s lips parted. “She’s confused. She hit her head. Children say strange things when they’re scared.”

Lily coughed again. Her voice was tiny, but clear enough to slice through every excuse.

“She called me a burden.”

Marcus went still.

Vivian’s eyes darted toward the guests, then toward the security cameras above the patio. For the first time that day, she seemed to remember the mansion had eyes.

But she still believed the eyes belonged to Marcus.

She did not know Amelia had installed a second system years ago, hidden where no one ever thought to look.
