. CHAPTER 7 — Lily’s Room in the West Wing

The next morning, Lily asked to see the locked west wing.

Marcus nearly said no. The place had been sealed since Amelia died, not by law but by grief. He had walked past those doors a thousand times, telling himself he was preserving memories when really he was avoiding them.

But Lily stood in the hallway wearing soft slippers and one of his old sweaters over her dress. She looked small, pale, and determined.

“Mommy’s things are there,” she said. “Right?”

Marcus nodded.

“Then I want to know her.”

Grace stood nearby with the keys. “Amelia wanted Lily to have access when she was ready.”

The lock turned.

Dusty sunlight poured over white sheets covering furniture, shelves of books, framed photographs, and a desk facing the gardens. Lily stepped inside as though entering a church.

On the desk sat a wooden music box. Grace wound it gently, and a soft melody filled the room. Lily touched the lid with two fingers.

“There’s a letter,” Grace said.

Marcus opened the drawer and found an envelope marked: For Lily, when the house must speak.

His hands shook as he gave it to her. Lily could read, but not the cursive fully, so Marcus sat beside her and read aloud.

My brave girl,

If you are hearing this, someone has tried to make you feel small inside the home built to protect you. That means they have forgotten the truth. You are not a burden. You are the reason. Every wall, every garden, every light in this house was placed with your future in mind. People may love money. Let them. You must love yourself more than their opinion.

— Mommy

Lily pressed the paper to her chest.

Marcus could not finish the last line at first. His voice broke. Grace looked toward the window, giving him the dignity of not being watched.

Lily leaned into him. “Did Mommy know someone would be mean?”

“She knew the world could be,” Marcus said. “So she made sure you would never face it alone.”

For years, he had thought Amelia left him a house full of ghosts.

Now he understood she had left Lily a fortress.
