Chapter 14 - Mark’s Last Bargain
Before trial, Mark requested a meeting with Henry.
He offered to plead guilty to financial fraud and child endangerment if prosecutors dropped the homicide charge. He would surrender custody, return trust money and testify against Vanessa.
In exchange, he wanted Henry to support a reduced sentence and promise the children would someday receive his letters.
Henry attended with attorneys present.
Mark appeared older, his hair gray at the temples and his confidence reduced to careful negotiation.
He said he had loved Caroline.
He claimed Vanessa proposed damaging the brakes and assured him the car would stop safely after a warning light appeared. He only wanted to frighten Caroline into delaying the trust complaint.
Henry asked why Mark selected the mountain route.
No answer.
Why he tracked the vehicle.
No answer.
Why he told Vanessa pressure would fail before the descent.
Mark looked down.
Then he changed tactics.
He reminded Henry of family dinners, vacations and the years when he appeared to be a good father. He said one terrible decision should not erase everything.
Henry thought of eighty-one marks on an attic wall.
“This was not one decision.”
Mark began crying.
He asked whether Noah and Lily hated him.
Henry refused to answer for them.
“You spent years making other people speak in their names. I will not do it now.”
The meeting ended.
Prosecutors accepted no homicide compromise. Mark later agreed to cooperate on corporate fraud, but the murder case proceeded.
Vanessa learned he intended to blame her and released messages showing his leadership in the plan.
Their alliance collapsed into mutual accusation.
Henry felt no victory watching them turn on each other.
The important change occurred elsewhere.
Noah and Lily were spending afternoons in a therapeutic school program. Lily could sleep without medication. Noah had begun drawing maps of houses with multiple exits.
Their future no longer depended on whether Mark admitted the complete truth.
