Chapter 03 - What the Tablet Recorded
The tablet had belonged to Caroline.
After her death, Mark told everyone it had been destroyed in the car crash. In reality, he hid it in a locked drawer because it contained access to her company files and family trust records.
Noah found it while searching for the attic key.
The battery was dead, but Lily smuggled him a charger from the kitchen. Most files had been erased. A backup application still connected to Caroline’s private cloud account whenever the device found Wi-Fi.
Noah began recording.
The first video showed Vanessa counting pills beside Lily’s bed.
“She only needs one,” Mark said from the doorway.
“One leaves her awake enough to talk.”
“She’s seven.”
“She’s the reason your father keeps asking questions.”
The second video captured Mark speaking with Dr. Calvin Reed, Vanessa’s brother and the psychiatrist who claimed to treat both children.
Calvin had never met Noah privately.
He had examined Lily once for less than fifteen minutes.
On the recording, he promised to sign evaluations declaring Noah dangerous and Lily unable to distinguish imagination from reality.
Mark asked whether the reports would permit him to assume permanent control of the trust.
Calvin replied, “If both beneficiaries lack capacity, the parent trustee exercises their voting rights.”
Vanessa added, “And the company sale can close before the boy turns eleven.”
The third recording was worse.
Mark stood inside Caroline’s study holding a document titled Emergency Guardian Amendment. Noah’s signature appeared at the bottom.
The child had never signed it.
Mark practiced tracing the name on scrap paper while Vanessa compared the result to school records.
Noah recorded through a gap beneath the cabinet.
He also captured them discussing Henry.
Vanessa wanted to request a protective order claiming the retired doctor was confused and obsessed with Caroline’s death. Mark hesitated only because Henry remained popular in the community.
“If he sees the children, he’ll know about the medication,” Mark said.
“Then make sure he sees sleeping children.”
The final file had no video, only sound.
It was recorded through the attic vent the night before Henry arrived.
Mark said a buyer had agreed to purchase Caroline’s diagnostic company for ninety million dollars. The children’s trust owned the controlling shares. The sale could not proceed without their approval unless they were declared legally incapacitated.
Vanessa asked what would happen if Noah escaped.
Mark answered, “He has nowhere to go. Everyone already believes he is unstable.”
Henry copied every file to his phone and sent encrypted links to the police, family attorney and his own medical colleague.
Vanessa continued speaking through the door.
“Henry, Lily is having an episode. Opening that closet will reinforce a delusion.”
Noah looked at him.
“She knows I’m here.”
“I know,” Henry said.

Mark had stopped pretending this was a family misunderstanding.
