Alejandro planned to name the new employee college fund after Sofia Maren.
Isabella objected at first.
“My mother hated charity photographs.”
“There would be no photographs.”
“She also hated rich people using names to feel generous.”
Alejandro smiled sadly.
“She would have liked that sentence.”
They created the fund without Reyes branding.
Workers chose the name: Maren Skills and Education Trust.
The board included employees and former scholarship recipients. Alejandro donated but received no voting seat.
The fund paid for nursing, engineering, hospitality management, accounting, and trades.
One recipient was Daniela’s younger sister.
Another was the daughter of a worker killed in the hotel fire.
At the first graduation, Alejandro sat in the audience rather than onstage.
Isabella noticed.
Years earlier, he might have interpreted visibility as proof of support.
Now he allowed the work to exist without making his presence necessary.
Their relationship grew through such ordinary corrections.
Not perfect.
Not purchased.
Real enough to continue.
At the first Maren Trust board meeting, employees challenged Alejandro’s proposed donation schedule.
They wanted guaranteed annual funding rather than one impressive gift vulnerable to market changes.
He revised the commitment.
A culinary apprentice then asked why hotel executives received paid education while housekeepers’ children needed scholarships.
The board expanded the trust into an education benefit available to every worker after one year of employment.
Isabella recognized the difference between charity and entitlement.
A scholarship could be withdrawn by generous people.
A contractual benefit belonged to the worker.
