Chapter 14 - The New Glasses
Lily’s replacement glasses arrived six weeks after the ballroom incident.
She selected dark green frames rather than blue.
Daniel expected her to choose something similar to the pair she lost.
She wanted a change.
The new lenses included no hidden camera.
They contained only the medical features Lily needed and an emergency beacon she could activate herself.
The designer offered to make the frames indestructible.
Lily refused.
“Nothing is indestructible.”
The statement sounded older than eight.
Her therapist helped her reclaim the ordinary frustrations of wearing glasses: fogging lenses, smudges, loose screws, and frames that slipped during play.
Not every problem meant danger.
At school, classmates asked about the viral video.
Lily’s teacher stopped the questions.
She was not required to explain.
A friend drew a picture of Lily wearing green glasses and flying above the mansion like a superhero.
Lily laughed, then asked for the cape to be removed.
“I was scared,” she said. “I didn’t fly.”
The friend changed the picture.
Lily stood on the ground.
The glasses remained.
The green frames came with two identical backup pairs.
One remained at school.
One stayed with Eleanor.
Lily chose the arrangement.
Before, adults made backup plans around her as if she were an emergency waiting to happen.
This time, the optometrist explained options and let her decide where each pair belonged.
A small ownership label inside every case read:
LILY HART — ASK BEFORE MOVING.
The words were practical.
They also changed household behavior.
