The image of Daniel raising the baseball bat spread across the internet.
Short clips made it appear he intended to strike Vanessa.
Commentators called him a protective father.
Others called him violent.
The full video showed him facing the cabinet, not Vanessa.
Still, Daniel understood why the image troubled people.
He had been furious.
For one second, part of him wanted Vanessa to feel the fear Lily felt.
He chose the glass lock instead.
At a press conference, he refused applause.
“I broke a cabinet to retrieve evidence. That was not justice. Police, witnesses, and courts handle what happened next.”
He also corrected the phrase “a father’s final warning.”
“The warning was not the bat. The warning was that Vanessa no longer had private control over my daughter, her records, or the people around her.”
The baseball bat had belonged to Anna.
She used it during a charity softball game and hit the final run that funded a pediatric vision clinic.
Daniel repaired the handle and placed it in storage.
He did not return it to the glass cabinet.
Objects gained power through the stories people attached to them.
The internet wanted the bat to symbolize revenge.
Daniel wanted it to remain connected to Anna’s laughter, not Vanessa’s fear.

He accepted the denial.

Daniel declined.
