Charles Comes Home

Chapter 05 - Charles Comes Home
Charles entered the mansion as though arriving for a board meeting rather than confronting the daughter and mother whose lives he had altered.
At fifty-three, he remained handsome in the controlled, expensive way that had made investors trust him. He kissed Margaret’s cheek, ignored Elena, and addressed Vanessa first.
“You should not believe anything until my attorneys review the documents.”
Vanessa held up the DNA report. “Did you steal me?”
Charles removed his coat.
“That language is emotional.”
“Did Elena give birth to me?”
He looked at the lawyers.
Vanessa shouted, “Look at me!”
Charles finally did.
“Yes.”
The word ended the last space in which denial could survive.
Elena stood near the fireplace. “You told me she was dead.”
“I was twenty-four.”
“You were old enough to bury a living child.”
“Audrey had just lost our daughter. She was not expected to survive the grief.”
“So you replaced her baby with mine.”
Charles’s expression hardened. “I gave Vanessa a life you could never have provided.”
Elena stepped forward.
Margaret caught her arm, not to silence her but to keep the confrontation from becoming physical.
Charles continued. “You lived in a rented room above a laundromat. You had no degree, no insurance, no family resources. Vanessa received the best schools, the best doctors, every opportunity.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Was I supposed to be grateful?”
“I did what was necessary.”
“For whom?”
Charles did not answer.
One attorney placed a notice on the table. It warned Elena against discussing the maternity claim publicly and threatened legal action for trespass, theft of genetic material, and attempted extortion.
Vanessa picked it up.
“You prepared this before coming home.”
Charles looked at Margaret. “Mother, you have allowed a household employee to manipulate you.”
Margaret removed her reading glasses.
“I spent my life excusing cruelty when it wore a Caldwell suit. That ended this morning.”
She handed the attorney a copy of the original certificate and a sworn statement from the nurse.
Charles barely glanced at them.
“Dr. Voss is dead. The nurse was medicated. None of this proves a crime.”
Elena’s face changed.
“The doctor is alive.”
Charles went still.
Margaret watched him carefully. “He is living under the name Malcolm Hayes in Savannah. Federal investigators interviewed him yesterday.”
Vanessa had never seen fear on her father’s face.
Now she did.
Charles turned toward the attorneys.
“Get me out of this house.”
Margaret blocked the doorway.
“This house belongs to the family trust.”
“I control the trust.”
“Not after today’s emergency board vote.”
Margaret placed one final document on the table.
