Audrey’s Diary

Chapter 06 - Audrey’s Diary

That night, Vanessa entered Audrey’s preserved bedroom.

Charles had ordered the room kept closed after his wife’s death. Vanessa visited only on anniversaries, usually standing in the doorway because touching anything felt disloyal.

This time she opened every drawer.

Beneath a stack of silk scarves, she found a locked diary. The key remained taped behind the frame of a wedding photograph.

The earliest entries described Audrey’s pregnancy.

She wrote about choosing names, feeling kicks, and fearing that Charles cared more about the Caldwell-Pembroke merger than their child.

Then came the night of the delivery.

The handwriting changed.

The baby was silent. They would not let me see her. Charles said I was confused from the medication. Hours later, he brought me a living girl and said God had corrected the mistake.

Audrey had questioned him.

Charles claimed the hospital initially believed the baby was stillborn but revived her. Dr. Voss confirmed the story.

Weeks later, Audrey discovered a second hospital bracelet in Charles’s jacket with the name Ruiz.

He told her it belonged to another patient whose blood had been used in an emergency transfusion.

The diary continued for years.

Audrey loved Vanessa. She also feared that the child had been taken from someone else.

When Vanessa was six, Audrey hired a private investigator. The investigator disappeared after sending one message: Elena Ruiz is alive.

Charles found the diary and threatened to remove Vanessa from Audrey permanently if she continued searching.

The final relevant entry was written two months before Audrey died.

I have loved Vanessa every day of her life. If love alone made a mother innocent, I would be innocent. But I chose silence because I was afraid of losing her. Somewhere, another woman lost her because of my fear.

Inside the diary was an envelope addressed to Vanessa.

The letter apologized without asking for forgiveness. Audrey said she had established a private account for Elena if the truth was ever found, but Charles controlled the documents.

Vanessa carried the diary downstairs.

Elena was preparing to leave.

“You cannot go,” Vanessa said.

Elena looked at the suitcase beside her. “Your father’s lawyers will make this house impossible.”

“I found Audrey’s diary.”

Elena read the first page, then closed it.

“Do you hate her?” Vanessa asked.

“I do not know her well enough to hate her.”

“She knew.”

“She also feared your father.”

“That does not excuse it.”

“No.”

Vanessa waited.

Elena added, “But truth does not require us to flatten people into monsters or saints.”

Vanessa looked toward the room where Charles had once controlled both women.

For the first time, she understood that the same lie could contain different kinds of guilt.
