Chapter 03 - The Message Inside the Watch
Investigators copied the memory card in a private conference room.
The first file was a video recorded by Daniel three days before his death.
He sat in his home office wearing an open-collar white shirt, the silver watch visible on his wrist.
“If Mara sees this,” he began, “then someone prevented me from returning.”
Mara covered her mouth.
Daniel explained that he had discovered unauthorized transfers from the Sterling Children’s Foundation. More than thirty million dollars had moved into consulting companies controlled by Victoria.
When he confronted her, she claimed the money financed confidential medical projects.
The projects did not exist.
Daniel planned to remove Victoria from the board.
He also learned that she had obtained copies of Mara’s medical records and contacted a private psychiatric facility.
“My sister believes Mara stands between her and control of the twins’ trust,” he said. “If anything happens to me, Mara remains their mother, legal guardian, and trustee. No document changing that is valid unless witnessed by Judge Reed and attorney Evelyn Park.”
Neither had witnessed a transfer.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“Mara, I am sorry I dismissed your concerns about Victoria. Protect the boys. Trust Grace. Do not trust any physician hired by my family.”
The video ended.
The second file contained audio from Daniel’s final meeting with Victoria.
“You cannot remove me,” she said.
“I already called the board.”
“If you embarrass me, Mara’s history becomes public.”
“She had postpartum depression. She recovered.”
“People believe records, Daniel.”
“Only if the records are real.”
A chair moved.
Victoria’s voice became colder.
“The plane leaves Friday. Think carefully before you board it.”
Daniel’s plane crashed Friday night.
The official investigation blamed mechanical failure.
Mara stared at Victoria through the conference-room glass.
For eighteen months, she had believed her husband died in an accident and her children were taken because illness made her unfit.
Now the watch connected both losses to the same woman.
Police sealed Victoria’s study, office, and private aircraft hangar.
The gala guests were allowed to leave after giving statements.
As Victoria was escorted to another room, she looked at Mara.
“You think one video makes you their mother again?”
Mara held her sons’ hands.
“I never stopped being their mother.”
Daniel’s video also listed the names of three employees he trusted.
One had been dismissed after his death.
Another received a settlement requiring silence.
The third, Grace, remained inside the estate because Daniel knew Victoria underestimated domestic workers.
“She sees uniforms,” Daniel said on the recording. “She does not see witnesses.”
Grace cried when she heard the line.
She had spent eighteen months wondering whether Daniel truly trusted her or simply forgot she existed inside the house.

The watch confirmed he had deliberately left part of the rescue plan with someone Victoria considered socially invisible.
The same arrogance that helped Victoria humiliate Mara before the gala also allowed evidence to survive beneath her roof.
