A Wedding Without a Test

Chapter 17 - A Wedding Without a Test

Seven years after the canceled ceremony, Adrian married Dr. Lena Ortiz.

Their relationship began long after his treatment ended and after another physician assumed responsibility for his care.

They dated privately for three years.

Before engagement, Lena insisted on independent counseling and legal safeguards protecting Adrian’s medical autonomy.

He laughed when she presented the documents.

“This is not very romantic.”

“It is romantic to know neither of us gains ownership through love.”

They married in a small courthouse ceremony with fourteen guests.

Adrian used a cane entering the building and a wheelchair leaving after fatigue increased.

No one treated the change as tragedy.

Lena wore a simple cream suit.

Rosa served as witness.

Evelyn cried quietly.

No magazines received exclusive photographs.

At dinner, Adrian told Lena he once believed a successful wedding proved a relationship was safe.

“Now?”

“Now I think safety is built in the exits, boundaries, and people allowed to disagree.”

Their marriage contained no surprise test.

Adrian did not hide his body’s condition to measure Lena’s character.

Trust developed through open information and structures that protected both people even if trust failed.

That difference mattered more than the size of the ceremony.

Before the courthouse ceremony, Adrian worried that using the wheelchair would invite comparison with the first wedding.

Lena asked what his body needed rather than what image felt strongest.

He chose the chair for the long hallway and stood briefly for photographs because he wanted to, not because anyone expected a reveal.

When fatigue arrived, he sat without apology.

The wedding clerk treated every transition as routine.

That ordinariness moved Adrian more than applause ever had.

A safe ceremony did not need a climax.

It needed consent that remained valid whether he stood, sat, changed his mind, or ended the day early.
