Blake disappeared before police reached his apartment.
His passport registered at a private airport outside the city.
Officers stopped the aircraft before departure.
Inside his luggage were offshore account codes, blank medical forms, and a second passport under another name.
Blake initially blamed Vanessa.
“She planned the wedding documents.”
“You entered the garage,” Detective Maya Chen said.
“She said Adrian was hurting her.”
“How did damaging the steering protect her?”
Blake requested an attorney.
Financial records showed Harold paid him five million dollars shortly after the crash. Most of it vanished into gambling accounts.
Vanessa sent another payment after Adrian’s first positive nerve test.
The accompanying message read:
Do not let the original recovery team review him.
Blake arranged false complaints against Teresa and two therapists.
He also paid the rehabilitation center that prepared to confine Adrian.
In exchange for a reduced sentence on financial charges, Blake agreed to provide passwords and testimony.
He admitted the steering sabotage but claimed he expected a minor accident that would postpone a board vote.
The mechanic’s analysis contradicted him.
The damage created a high probability of fatal loss of control.
Blake had known.
Adrian attended none of his interviews.
He refused to let the case become a private confrontation between two men over one woman.
The crime involved workers, patients, shareholders, and charities beyond their relationship.
Keeping the investigation independent protected the result from being dismissed as revenge after a failed wedding.
Blake’s cooperation revealed that Harold had encouraged Vanessa to pursue Adrian years before the crash.
Harold’s investment firm held debt tied to Cole Hospitality. Marriage offered access to information and voting leverage he could not obtain through ordinary negotiation.
Vanessa initially refused.
Then Adrian rejected a merger proposal that would have rescued Harold’s failing funds.
Messages showed the relationship turning from attraction into strategy.
That history did not mean every moment between Adrian and Vanessa had been false.
They had laughed, traveled, and shared genuine affection.
The existence of real emotion made the betrayal more confusing, not less criminal.
Adrian’s therapist helped him accept that someone could feel attachment while choosing control, fraud, and violence.
