Dinner With the Enemy

Chapter 11 - Dinner With the Enemy
The Mercer dining room seated thirty-two people.
That night, it held six.
Victoria sat at one end of the table, Grant at the other. Mara, Daniel, Noah, and June occupied the middle as though placed on a battlefield disguised with silverware.
No servants were present.
“That’s comforting,” June said. “Nothing says family honesty like dismissing witnesses.”
Victoria folded her napkin. “Your sense of humor is inappropriate.”
“So is kidnapping a newborn.”
Grant smiled faintly. “Allegedly.”
Noah looked at him. “Grandmother recorded you.”
The smile disappeared.
Dinner remained untouched.
Victoria addressed Mara. “You believe I stole your child for money.”
“You did.”
“I separated you because Grant showed me evidence that Daniel’s relationship with you endangered the company.”
Daniel leaned forward. “What evidence?”
Grant placed a file on the table.
Inside were medical reports claiming Noah carried a rare hereditary heart condition from Mara’s family. The trust’s insurance clause would have frozen shares if Noah were medically impaired, creating panic among lenders. Grant argued Mara planned to reveal the diagnosis and force a sale.
Mara read the report.
It named a genetic mutation she had never heard of.
“This is fake.”
Victoria’s gaze shifted to Grant.
He did not deny it.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.
Grant poured wine. “Mother, don’t perform innocence now. It’s beneath you.”
Daniel stood. “You forged the medical report?”
“I protected the company.”
“You trafficked my son.”
“I kept him in his own house.”
Mara rose too. “You kept him as collateral.”
Grant’s calm cracked. “Do you know what would happen if control transferred to Daniel? He would have married you, sold half the company to fund some heroic social project, and called it love. Thousands of employees would have paid for his conscience.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
Victoria slapped the table. “Enough.”
Noah flinched.
Mara moved between him and the adults.
Grant watched her, then smiled again. “There. Instinctive. Convincing.”
June noticed first. “What did you do?”
Police lights flashed through the windows.
Grant placed his wineglass down.
“The cash Noah stole was marked foundation money,” he said. “Mara Quinn is in possession of stolen funds. She crossed state lines with a missing child and intimidated a witness.”
Ruth.
Mara’s stomach dropped.
Grant continued. “And this dinner is being recorded. Her arrival proves she came to extort the family.”
Daniel reached for his phone. It had no signal.
Victoria stared at Grant. “You said we were negotiating.”
“We are. With leverage.”
Officers entered the room.
June stood and announced herself as counsel, but the warrant had already been signed.
Mara knelt before Noah.
“Listen to me. I’m not leaving you.”
His eyes filled. “That’s what adults say before they leave.”
“I know.”
An officer took Mara’s wrist.
She kept her gaze on Noah.
“Then don’t believe my words. Watch what I do next.”
As they pulled her away, Noah began to cry without making a sound.
Daniel moved to follow.
Grant blocked him.
“One more step,” Grant whispered, “and I petition the court to remove Noah from both of you.”
Daniel looked at his son.
May you like
Grant mistook hesitation for surrender.
It was the last mistake he would make without consequence.
