The Record That Would Not Burn

Chapter 13 - The Record That Would Not Burn

Ruth Bell testified before a grand jury three days later.

She authenticated the shift notes, the cassette, and Victoria’s signature. Dr. Harlan was arrested at the airport while attempting to board a flight to Switzerland.

Cole Vance disappeared.

Grant remained free, protected by lawyers and the argument that every action had been performed in the company’s interest. The board refused to suspend him without proof tying him directly to the original abduction.

Then Ruth remembered the archive.

St. Catherine’s Hospital had stored neonatal security footage in an underground records building scheduled for demolition. Digital copies were supposedly destroyed in the flood, but the original backup tapes might remain.

Mara, Daniel, June, and a state investigator arrived at dusk.

Smoke was already rising from the loading bay.

“Accident?” Daniel asked.

Mara saw a black pickup leaving the service road.

“No.”

Fire crews were minutes away. The investigator ordered everyone back.

Ruth pointed at a basement window. “The neonatal tapes are in Vault C.”

Mara ran before anyone could stop her.

Daniel followed.

Inside, smoke rolled across the ceiling. Sprinklers coughed muddy water. Mara tied a wet cloth over her mouth and moved low through the corridor.

“You don’t have to keep following me,” she shouted.

Daniel coughed. “I’m trying a new thing called not failing.”

They found Vault C behind a warped metal door. Daniel used a fire extinguisher to break the lock.

Rows of tape boxes lined the shelves.

Mara located the date of Noah’s birth.

Footsteps sounded in the smoke.

Cole Vance appeared with a gasoline can and a pistol held low.

Daniel stepped in front of Mara.

Vance laughed. “Seven years late, but very noble.”

“You work for Grant,” Daniel said.

“I work for whoever understands that truth is expensive.”

Mara noticed Vance’s left sleeve burning at the cuff. He had not realized.

“Your arm,” she said.

He glanced down.

Daniel lunged.

The pistol fired into the ceiling. Mara kicked the gasoline can away while Daniel drove Vance against the shelves. Burning fabric fell onto a trail of fuel.

Flames raced across the floor.

Mara grabbed the tape box. Daniel dragged Vance toward the exit despite Mara shouting to leave him.

“He’ll die!”

“He knows where the bodies are buried!”

“Daniel!”

“And I’m done letting this family decide who gets abandoned!”

Together they hauled Vance through the corridor as fire swallowed the vault.

Outside, paramedics treated them. Vance, burned but conscious, watched the state investigator seal the tape box.

A technician played the footage that night.

The grainy recording showed Ruth carrying newborn Noah into the private wing. Victoria followed.

Then Grant entered frame.

He removed Mara’s identification band from the bassinet, replaced it with a Mercer band, and looked directly into the camera.

The image was silent.

But his lips formed three unmistakable words.

Now he belongs.
