Isla’s Version of Love

Chapter 11 - Isla’s Version of Love
Isla Maren did not run.
She was too proud to run in a way that looked like fear. Instead, she retreated to the penthouse suite she had decorated with Adrian’s money and called her crisis team from a white sofa that had never known an honest conversation.
By noon, her version of the story appeared online.
A tasteful black-and-white photograph of Isla looking wounded.
A statement about manipulation, mental health, and the cruelty of false accusations.
A line about “protecting a vulnerable man from a woman with a history of delusions.”
Nora saw it on Mrs. Bell’s cracked tablet and went very quiet.
Oliver was asleep in the next room, surrounded by police-approved safety and three stuffed animals Mrs. Bell had rescued from the disturbed apartment. Adrian had gone downstairs to speak with investigators. For ten minutes, Nora let herself sit in the kitchen and be no one’s shield.
Then Isla’s video began playing automatically.
“I loved Adrian enough to protect him,” Isla said to the camera, eyes shining on command. “Sometimes love means making impossible choices when dangerous people try to attach themselves to power.”
Mrs. Bell muttered a word Nora pretended not to hear.
Nora reached to turn it off.
A new clip loaded before she could.
Meridian House. Filmed from someone’s table. Oliver crying in Adrian’s arms. Nora stepping forward. Isla saying, Give him to security.
The internet had its own cruelty, but sometimes cruelty turned on the right person.
Comments rolled beneath the clip faster than Nora could read.
Why did the kid fear security?
That mom looks terrified.
The fiancée knew before he did.
Someone find the woman in beige.
Nora closed the tablet.
She had wanted to be believed for years. Now that belief arrived as a flood, and it frightened her almost as much as silence. Public sympathy could become public hunger. Oliver was not proof. He was a child. He still needed lunch and bedtime and someone to help him remember that adults shouting did not mean the world was ending.
Adrian returned at one.
He knocked before entering Mrs. Bell’s apartment, though the door was open.
Nora noticed.
“Isla released a statement,” she said.
“I saw.”
“She’ll use my medical records.”
“No,” Adrian said. “She won’t.”
Nora looked up.
“I had the court seal the false hospital file pending investigation. Maya found the original attending nurse. She’s alive. She kept copies.”
Mrs. Bell slapped the table. “Bless that woman.”
Adrian placed a second folder before Nora. “There’s more. Isla’s father funded the clinic merger that year. The doctor who signed your risk report received a position afterward.”
Nora’s face drained.
“It wasn’t just about keeping Oliver from you,” Adrian said. “Your pregnancy threatened the voting trust. My father’s will transferred controlling shares to any legitimate Hale heir born before my thirty-fifth birthday.”
Nora stared at him.
Oliver was not only a child Isla had hidden.
He was the one person who could have stopped her from becoming queen of Adrian’s empire.
In the bedroom, Oliver stirred and called, “Mom?”
Nora stood immediately.
Adrian stepped back to let her pass.
That movement, too, mattered. He did not rush ahead. Did not claim. Did not perform fatherhood for witnesses.
He watched Nora go first.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
Tell Nora the first fire was only a warning.

Attached beneath it was a photograph of Nora’s old apartment building.
