The Fiancée With Two Phones

Chapter 06 - The Fiancée With Two Phones

Isla’s second phone changed the temperature of the room.

It was not sleek or decorated like the one she used in photographs. It was a plain black device with no case, no personal lock screen, no saved family images. A burner, the young officer called it after asking her twice to unlock it and watching her refuse with the kind of silence that answers more than speech.

Adrian recognized the silence.

He had seen it in negotiations when a dishonest man realized the table had tilted.

The officer sealed the phone in an evidence bag. Isla stared at it as though a part of her had been removed.

“This is unlawful,” she said.

“No,” the officer replied. “This is cautious.”

Margot Voss arrived twelve minutes later and made everything worse.

She entered in a camel coat, blond hair dry despite the rain, expression already arranged into contempt. Behind her came a man Adrian knew from foundation security, broad, gray-bearded, and suddenly pale when Oliver shrank behind Nora.

“That’s him,” Oliver whispered.

The security man stopped moving.

Adrian felt rage climb his spine, but he stayed still. Not because he was calm. Because his son was watching what men did with anger.

Margot tried to take control before anyone could speak. “My client will not answer questions in a public dining room. Mr. Hale, I strongly advise you not to make statements against foundation personnel while emotionally compromised.”

“Emotionally compromised,” Nora repeated, almost laughing. “That’s what you called me after giving birth.”

Margot looked at her as if Nora were furniture placed incorrectly.

“I protected a family from a false claim.”

Adrian turned slowly. “You told me you never met her.”

Margot did not blink, but Isla did.

A small thing. A betrayal between criminals.

Adrian saw it.

The officer saw it too.

“Ms. Voss,” the officer said, “we’ll need you to remain available.”

Margot lifted her chin. “On what basis?”

Mrs. Bell raised her recorder. “Would you like to hear your own basis again?”

A nervous laugh rippled from someone near the bar.

Margot’s cheeks colored.

Adrian looked toward the gray-bearded security man. “Glen, who sent you to Nora’s apartment tonight?”

Glen’s mouth opened, closed.

“Don’t answer,” Margot snapped.

“Wrong advice,” the officer said.

Glen swallowed. He was a man built for intimidation, not prison. Under the chandelier light, sweat beaded near his temple.

“I was told there was a custody transfer.”

“By whom?” Adrian asked.

Glen looked at Isla.

Isla whispered, “You idiot.”

The room heard it.

Nora pulled Oliver closer. Adrian stepped between them and everyone else without thinking.

Margot moved toward Isla, speaking under her breath. Adrian caught only fragments: say nothing, destroy, delayed warrant.

Then his own phone buzzed.

A message from his chief of staff, Maya Chen, appeared on screen.

Three words.

CHECK FOUNDATION SERVER.

Adrian opened the secure link.

Folders loaded. Archived emails. Legal invoices. Private memorandums. One subject line made his blood turn cold:

W-17: WHITAKER CONTAINMENT STRATEGY.

Attached beneath it was a spreadsheet of payments, names, dates, and one scanned image of a hospital bracelet.

NORA WHITAKER. MALE INFANT. HALE PATERNITY FLAGGED.

Adrian looked up.

Isla must have seen the change in his face, because she stopped pretending.

“You would have destroyed yourself for her,” she said.

Nora went still.

Adrian’s voice came very quietly. “No. I destroyed myself without her.”

He forwarded the file to the officer, then to his board, then to every attorney whose loyalty had never been bought by Isla Maren.

By the time dessert plates were cleared from other tables, the engagement was over.

By midnight, so was the cover-up.
