The Hearing

Chapter 17 - The Hearing

The family court hearing took place in a room too beige for the amount of human damage it contained.

Evelyn wore a navy dress with sleeves that covered most of the fading marks but not all of them. She did not choose it for sympathy. She chose it because it had pockets, and any woman entering court deserves pockets. In one pocket she kept a smooth stone from her mother’s garden. In the other, a folded note from Raymond that read: Breathe. Also, your lawyer scares me, which is good.

Grant arrived with two attorneys and the expression of a man practicing humility without enjoying the rehearsal. He did not look at Evelyn at first. When he did, his face performed sorrow.

She felt nothing.

That surprised her. She had expected fear, rage, maybe grief. Instead, she felt a clean distance, like watching a storm through double-paned glass.

The judge reviewed the protective order petition, medical records, witness statements, security footage summaries, and Grant’s public apology. Grant’s attorney attempted to argue that media attention had distorted the situation.

Evelyn’s attorney, Naomi Price, stood.

“Your Honor, media attention did not bruise my client’s ribs.”

The room became very still.

Naomi continued, precise and merciless. She did not exaggerate. She did not need to. Truth, when organized properly, has its own sharp edges.

Lena testified by video. Her voice shook at first, then steadied when she described the elevator doors closing. Madison testified under subpoena and managed to sound both self-protective and useful, which Naomi later called “morally unattractive but legally nutritious.”

Grant chose not to testify.

Evelyn did.

Naomi asked only a few questions.

“Mrs. Holloway, do you feel safe having contact with your husband?”

“No.”

“Do you believe he may attempt to intimidate you or others involved in this case?”

“Yes.”

“What do you want from this court today?”

Evelyn looked at Grant then. Not with hatred. Hatred would have kept them connected. She looked at him as one looks at a locked door from the outside.

“I want the law to create the distance I should have been allowed to choose in peace.”

The judge granted the order.

Grant’s face tightened, but he said nothing.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions. Raymond stood near the car, ready to shield her, but Evelyn touched his arm.

“I’ll say one thing.”

He nodded.

She faced the cameras. “Today was not about revenge. It was about safety. If you are listening to this from a place where you feel trapped, please tell one safe person the truth.”

Then she got into the car.
