Madison Learns Arithmetic

Chapter 06 - Madison Learns Arithmetic

Madison Vale did not believe in consequences. She believed in lighting, leverage, and the right dress at the right funeral. Consequences were for people who signed leases without lawyers. Consequences were for women who cried in bathrooms. Madison had spent ten years becoming untouchable by staying close to men who mistook proximity for loyalty.

Grant was supposed to be her cleanest climb.

He had promised her a beach house in Malibu after the merger closed, a board advisory title with no actual work, and a diamond bracelet that looked modest only if you had lost your mind in a jewelry vault. He had also promised to leave Evelyn once the public narrative could be managed.

“She’s fragile,” he had said.

Madison knew that meant inconvenient.

After the gala dinner shattered, Grant dragged her into a private hallway near the hotel kitchen. His phone would not stop ringing. Her phone was worse. Texts from gossip pages. A message from her publicist reading CALL ME BEFORE YOU BREATHE. Another from an unknown number containing a single screenshot of the penthouse security feed.

Madison stared at it.

There she was in silver silk, standing near the bar while Evelyn lay on the floor.

No audio. It did not need audio.

Grant snatched for the phone. “Who sent that?”

Madison pulled back. “Someone with access.”

“Delete it.”

“Are you insane?”

His eyes flashed. “Do not start with me.”

For the first time all night, Madison felt the edge of the knife she had helped sharpen. It had been entertaining when pointed at Evelyn. It looked different facing her.

A kitchen porter passed with a tray of tiny desserts and immediately decided he had urgent business elsewhere. Madison lowered her voice.

“You said she was nobody.”

“She is nobody.”

“Then why did Raymond Lane just freeze your credit line?”

Grant’s mouth opened, then closed. His confidence, usually inflated by expensive air, began to leak.

Madison had built her life on reading men quickly. She saw it now: Grant did not know. He had married a door and never checked what mansion it opened into.

Her laugh came out thin. “Oh my God. You hit Raymond Lane’s daughter.”

Grant grabbed her arm. “Keep your voice down.”

Madison looked at his hand.

The old Madison would have smiled, leaned closer, turned his panic into dependence. But the screenshot on her phone glowed like a verdict. She imagined headlines. Brand Strategist Watched Assault. Mistress Smiled As Wife Bled. The internet would not be kind, and Madison respected only two things: money and mobs.

“Let go,” she said.

Grant did not.

So she did the first honest thing she had done all night.

She slapped him.

Not hard enough for justice. Hard enough for clarity.

Grant released her, stunned.

Madison stepped back, breathing fast. “You promised me an empire.”

May you like

He stared at her.

She lifted her phone. “Looks like I need to save myself from the ruins.”
