The Report at Midnight

Chapter 12 - The Report at Midnight

The DNA result arrived after midnight.

By then, Harrington Hall had emptied of guests but not of consequences. Outside, news vans gathered behind barricades. Inside, lawyers moved between rooms with laptops and grim faces. Staff collected broken glass from the marble where Lucas had first been accused. Someone had covered the stage cameras, though everyone knew the important footage had already escaped into the world.

Emma sat in a quiet side room with Lucas asleep across her lap.

He had fought sleep as long as he could, afraid that if he closed his eyes, the room would change and Thomas would vanish like every answer his mother never gave. But exhaustion finally won. His fingers still clutched the edge of Emma’s apron.

Thomas stood near the window, afraid to sit too close and afraid to move too far away. He had removed his bow tie. His tuxedo jacket lay over a chair. Without the polished campaign uniform, he looked younger and ruined.

“I should have found you,” he said.

Emma stroked Lucas’s hair. “Yes.”

The honesty struck him harder than comfort would have.

“I wanted to believe you left because if you didn’t, then I had failed you in a way I couldn’t survive.”

Emma looked up. “I survived it.”

He closed his eyes.

Daniel Price entered with the doctor and Arthur behind him. No one needed to ask what the paper said. The doctor’s face held no mystery, only solemn confirmation.

Thomas Calder is not excluded as the biological father. Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.

Thomas took the report. His hands trembled.

Lucas woke when Emma shifted. “Mom?”

She kissed his forehead. “You’re okay.”

Thomas crouched a few feet away, holding the paper like it might break. “Lucas,” he whispered, “it says I’m your father.”

The boy blinked, still half asleep. “For real?”

“For real.”

Lucas looked at Emma. She nodded.

He sat up slowly. “So why didn’t you come?”

The question was innocent. That made it merciless.

Thomas knelt on the carpet. “Because I was told a lie, and I believed it when I should have looked harder. That is my fault. Not yours. Never yours.”

Lucas considered him with the grave suspicion only children can carry honestly. “Are you going to leave after tonight?”

“No.”

Emma’s hand tightened slightly on her son’s shoulder.

Thomas noticed. “Not unless your mom asks me to. And even then, I will still be responsible for you. I will still show up. I will still earn what I should have protected from the beginning.”

Lucas stared at him for a long time.

May you like

Then he reached out one small hand.

Thomas took it like a vow.
