The Safe Beneath Cedar House

Chapter 02 - The Safe Beneath Cedar House

Helen woke shortly before sunrise.

Mason sat beside her bed, still wearing the undershirt from his uniform. He had not slept. When her eyes opened, he apologized before asking whether she was in pain.

“I left you alone with her.”

Helen’s voice was weak. “Distance did not hurt me. She used it.”

She explained that Celeste moved into Helen’s home six months after Mason deployed, claiming the roof at the marital house needed repair. At first she brought groceries and attended medical appointments. Then she began controlling mail, calls, medication, and transportation.

Whenever Helen tried to tell Mason, Celeste ended the video call or said the connection had failed.

Helen hid the clock camera after realizing her words would never reach him unchanged.

“What is in the safe?” Mason asked.

“Your father’s company.”

Thomas Reed had been a combat engineer who lost his left leg during service. Frustrated by expensive, uncomfortable prosthetics, he designed an adaptive knee joint in the workshop beneath Cedar House. His invention could be manufactured cheaply and adjusted without specialized machinery.

Richard Vale financed production. Publicly, the men became partners.

Privately, Thomas retained fifty-one percent ownership through the Reed Innovation Trust. Cedar House and its eighty acres were also protected by the trust so injured veterans could receive rehabilitation regardless of income.

Four years earlier, Thomas announced that Vale Mobility was overcharging hospitals and hiding foreign licensing profits.

Two days later, he died in a warehouse fire.

Richard called it a tragic accident and told Mason that Thomas had already transferred his shares to the Vale family.

Helen never believed him.

“The original trust and patent assignment are in the safe,” she said. “Richard has copies with different pages.”

The safe was hidden beneath the first therapy room at Cedar House.

Detective Ortiz accompanied Mason and trust attorney Naomi Price to the property. Snow covered the cedar cabins. The main lodge stood silent beside the frozen lake.

The combination came from the serial numbers engraved on Thomas’s military medals.

Inside the safe they found the original patent, trust agreement, factory ledgers, and a sealed letter to Mason. The trust confirmed that Helen remained controlling trustee and Mason was successor. Richard Vale had no right to the majority shares.

Thomas’s letter contained a warning:

If Richard claims I sold, compare the signature dates with the warehouse cameras. I refused his final offer. Henry Lewis witnessed it.

Henry Lewis had been Thomas’s chief engineer.

According to company records, he died in the same fire.

At the bottom of the safe lay a black external drive. Before Mason could connect it, glass broke in the corridor.

A man in a dark jacket ran through the side exit.

Police chased him into the trees but lost him near the lake. He dropped a folder containing a floor plan of Cedar House, a photograph of the safe, and Mason’s deployment schedule.

Across Friday’s date, someone had written:

TRANSFER COMPLETE BEFORE SOLDIER RETURNS.

Richard had known exactly how long the house would remain unprotected.

Mason had returned early enough to save his mother.

He still did not know whether he had returned early enough to save his father’s truth.
