Chapter 06 - The Warehouse Fire

The warehouse fire that killed Thomas Reed had been ruled accidental within forty-eight hours.

The report blamed a battery explosion near the prototype laboratory. Vale Mobility paid for the funeral, honored Thomas as a visionary partner, and rebuilt the facility before independent investigators could inspect the scene.

Celeste’s records identified the security chief on duty that night: Paul Danner.

Danner disappeared after the fire and now managed a marina in Maine under another name.

Federal agents found him preparing to leave the country.

At first, he denied everything.

Then they showed him Richard’s private ledger. Danner had received three million dollars through a company controlled by Celeste’s brother.

He requested protection.

Thomas had arranged to meet Henry Lewis at the warehouse to copy engineering logs before presenting them to regulators. Richard arrived first with Danner and two guards.

An argument followed.

Thomas refused to surrender the trust termination notice. Richard ordered Danner to lock the exterior exits while he searched the laboratory. A guard poured solvent over the paper archive.

The plan, Danner claimed, was to destroy records and frighten Thomas.

The fire spread faster than expected.

Henry escaped through a loading chute. Thomas reached the main exit, but the electronic lock had been disabled.

Danner could have opened it from the security station.

Richard told him not to.

“He said Thomas had already destroyed enough lives,” Danner testified.

The emergency call came from a passing truck driver, not Vale security.

Danner preserved one piece of evidence: a backup from the warehouse access system. The log showed Richard’s badge entering at 10:13 p.m. and leaving at 10:51.

The fire began at 10:42.

Richard told investigators he had been at a charity dinner all evening.

Photographs from the dinner showed him arriving after eleven.

Mason listened to Danner’s statement without speaking.

His last conversation with Thomas had been an argument. Mason wanted to reenlist. Thomas believed he should remain and help run Cedar House. Mason accused him of caring more about broken strangers than his own son.

Thomas died before they spoke again.

For years, Richard comforted Mason by saying Thomas knew he was loved.

Now Mason understood that Richard had stood outside the locked warehouse while Thomas burned.

The grief became physical.

He left the interview room and struck the concrete wall once before stopping himself. Detective Ortiz remained several feet away.

“You are allowed to be angry,” she said.

“I am afraid of what anger makes me.”

“Then choose what it does next.”

Mason opened his hand.

He returned to the room and signed permission for prosecutors to use Thomas’s private records. He also authorized release of the low-cost manufacturing files to an independent medical foundation if the court approved.

Richard had killed to keep the design profitable and controlled.

Mason’s first answer would be to make it harder for any one man to own again.

The grand jury issued new charges.

Conspiracy.

Arson.
