Gabriel faced pressure from the Vale board.
His marriage to Elena would consolidate inheritance, calm investors, and create a public story of family restoration.
He rejected every argument.
“Elena is not a solution to a governance problem.”
The board postponed his promotion.
He accepted the consequence.
Elena noticed.
“I don’t want you sacrificing your life to prove you love me.”
“I am not sacrificing. I am refusing to use marriage as corporate strategy.”
They resumed dating slowly.
No palace hotel suites.
No photographers.
They ate at small restaurants under different reservations and took walks with security at a distance.
Elena sometimes looked at him and saw the man who stood beside her before the crown.
Other times she saw a member of the family whose wealth funded her abduction.
Both perceptions were real.
Gabriel attended counseling independently.
He learned not to ask Elena to reassure him that she did not blame him.
His discomfort belonged to him.
A year later, he proposed again in her jewelry studio after it reopened.
No audience.
No family necklace.
He offered a plain ring designed with Elena’s input.
“Will you marry me when marriage is only about us?”
Elena smiled.
“That may never be completely possible.”
“Then as close as we can make it.”
She said yes.
They chose a civil ceremony with twelve guests.
Helena attended as Elena’s invited mother, not as head of the Vale family.
The tiara remained in the archive.
Gabriel’s second proposal included a written agreement protecting Elena’s financial independence and limiting any Vale family claim over her trust.
She laughed when she saw the folder.
“This is very romantic.”
“I learned from the first wedding.”
The humor mattered.
Trauma had turned every family document into potential danger. Reviewing the agreement together made paperwork collaborative rather than coercive.
Elena added clauses protecting her studio, Open Records role, and right to use every part of her chosen name.
Gabriel added nothing without discussion.
