Seven years into his sentence, Charles wrote to Elena.
The first letter blamed Robert, Helena, and family pressure.

Elena read the entire letter with her attorney present.

He asked whether Elena would visit.

“Did finding her heal you?” he asked.
“No.”
“Then what was it all for?”

Charles lowered his eyes.
Helena left without forgiveness.
