The Man Beneath the Chandelier

Chapter 03 - The Man Beneath the Chandelier

Daniel Mercer was known across the city as the chairman of the Mercer Foundation, owner of the Grand Meridian, and the man whose signature could save a hospital or end a corporation. Yet when he knelt beside the wheelchair, none of that power mattered. He looked only like a frightened son.

Eleanor Mercer touched his cheek. “I’m shaken, Daniel. Nothing more.”

Daniel examined the red mark where the chair’s handle had struck the table. Then he looked up at Vivian.

“You raised your hand to my mother.”

Vivian’s lips parted. “I didn’t know who she was.”

The answer spread through the crowd in a murmur.

Daniel stood. “That is your defense?”

“I mean—she was dressed like—” Vivian stopped, hearing the trap too late.

“Like someone you believed had no power?”

Vivian glanced at the donors around her, searching for an ally. “This has been misunderstood. The chair hit me. Wine was spilled. The waitress became violent.”

Leah’s hands trembled now that the danger had passed. She clasped them behind her apron so no one would see.

Daniel turned toward her. “Your name?”

“Leah Carter.”

“Did you strike Ms. Cross?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten her?”

“No. I stopped her hand.”

Daniel looked at the guests. “Did anyone here see otherwise?”

No one spoke.

Eleanor’s voice was quiet but clear. “The young woman told Vivian to release my chair. Vivian raised her hand. Leah stopped her.”

Franklin Doyle stepped in. “Mr. Mercer, perhaps we should move this discussion somewhere private. The gala—”

“The gala is raising money for elder protection,” Daniel said. “I can think of no discussion more relevant.”

A few guests lowered their eyes.

Vivian’s anger returned. “You cannot humiliate me because of one confused old woman and a waitress looking for attention.”

Eleanor’s expression changed. The tremor left her voice.

“I founded the Mercer Foundation thirty-two years ago after my own mother died in a care home where no one believed her complaints. I came tonight without my usual staff because I wanted to see how this event treated people who appeared unimportant.”

She looked around the room.

“Now I have my answer.”

Daniel turned to security. “Do not remove Leah Carter.”

Then he looked at Vivian.

“Remove Ms. Cross from the stage program. Freeze her foundation access. And preserve every security recording from tonight.”

Vivian’s eyes widened. “You’re choosing a waitress over me?”

Daniel answered, “I’m choosing the truth over a donor.”
