A Lie Planted in Silver

Chapter 07 - A Lie Planted in Silver

The bracelet belonged to Vivian Cross.

It was worth more than Leah’s apartment building and had been reported missing shortly after the gala. Hotel security claimed they found it wrapped inside Leah’s spare uniform.

Franklin Doyle, dismissed but still cooperating with investigators, told police Leah had access to the ballroom and had behaved “aggressively” toward Vivian. The story was simple, elegant, and poisonous: a resentful waitress caused a scene, stole a bracelet, then pretended moral outrage to hide the crime.

Leah sat in a security office with Daniel, Eleanor, and a detective named Marisol Vega.

“I did not take it,” Leah said.

Detective Vega placed photographs on the table. “Your locker was not forced.”

“Half the supervisors know the combination.”

“Who knew you would leave your uniform behind?”

“Doyle. He told me to wait in the service office.”

Daniel stood at the far wall, furious with himself. “The corridor cameras?”

“Offline for maintenance between nine and eleven,” Vega replied.

Eleanor’s eyes sharpened. “Convenient.”

Vivian arrived with two attorneys and a bandage around the wrist Leah had caught. She paused in the doorway as if surprised to see them.

“I never wanted this,” she said. “I only want my property returned.”

Leah almost admired the performance.

Vivian sat opposite her. “Tell them the truth, Leah. Perhaps desperation made you act foolishly. People forgive poverty more easily than malice.”

“My father taught me not to steal.”

“And your mother?”

Leah’s face changed. Vivian smiled slightly. She had researched them.

“My mother taught me to recognize cruelty dressed as concern.”

Detective Vega interrupted before the exchange escalated. “Ms. Cross, did you personally place the bracelet in your clutch after arriving?”

“My assistant did.”

“Name?”

“Camille Ross.”

Camille was missing from the interview.

Vega requested her phone records and asked hotel technicians for every camera feed, including loading docks, kitchens, elevators, and neighboring businesses. Vivian’s attorneys objected to nearly everything.

Before leaving, Vivian stopped beside Leah.

“You should have let my hand fall,” she whispered. “It would have cost you nothing.”

Leah met her gaze. “It would have cost her.”

Vivian’s smile vanished.

That evening, Detective Vega received footage from a bakery across the alley. It showed Camille entering the employee door with Leah’s abandoned uniform folded beneath her arm.
