When Julian Reaches for the Phone

Chapter 11 - When Julian Reaches for the Phone

Julian moved when he thought no one was watching Mia.

It was the oldest mistake powerful men made around women they considered small. They watched the father, the detective, the bride, the cameras. They did not watch the waitress holding the only thing that could end them.

Mia had stepped aside near the rose arch, her phone sealed in an evidence bag but still in her possession until the detective finished logging the chain of custody. Her hands had stopped shaking, or maybe the shaking had become part of her now.

Julian lunged.

He did not get far.

Serena moved first.

The train of her stained gown caught under her heel, but she grabbed Mia’s arm and pulled her backward just as Julian’s fingers swiped empty air. The security chief tackled him against the stone pedestal. Guests screamed. A vase of white roses overturned, scattering petals across the grass.

Julian’s perfect hair fell into his eyes. His face twisted with pure hatred.

“Give me that phone!”

The words damned him more completely than any confession.

Mia stumbled into Serena. For one strange second, the bride and the waitress held each other upright beneath the ruined arch. Serena’s dress smelled like orange juice and roses. Mia’s uniform smelled like fear and soap.

Julian fought the guard until Edward’s cane struck the ground.

“Enough.”

The security chief forced Julian’s wrists behind his back. He was not arrested in a dramatic burst of sirens and flashing lights. It happened quietly, almost clinically, which made it worse. The man who had planned to inherit a dynasty was reduced to breathing hard on the grass while a detective read him rights beside a fallen centerpiece.

Camille began to cry then.

Not from remorse. Serena could see that. Camille cried because consequences had finally found a body to live in.

Preston Hale said nothing. His lawyers had already arrived at the gate, but Edward refused them entry until police finished processing the scene.

Mia looked at Serena. “Why did you do that?”

Serena wiped a rose petal from her sleeve. “Because he was reaching for you.”

“No one ever does that.”

The sentence was so soft Serena almost missed it.

She thought of Elena Keller carrying proof no one protected. She thought of her own mother’s warning hidden on the back of a photograph. She thought of all the women who had tried to speak inside beautiful houses and been told beauty mattered more.

“Someone should have,” Serena said.

Mia looked away before tears could answer.
