Julian’s Last Offer

Chapter 15 - Julian’s Last Offer
Julian called Serena from a private number three days later.
She almost did not answer. Her lawyers told her not to. Her father told her to let the police handle him. Mia, when asked, simply said, “Men like him hate silence more than anger.”
So Serena answered and said nothing.
Julian spoke first.
“You’re enjoying this.”
She looked out the window of her mother’s study, watching workers dismantle the floral arch. “No.”
“You humiliated me.”
“That is an interesting thing to say to the woman you tried to manipulate at her own wedding.”
A pause. Then his voice softened into the version that once made her forgive small cruelties. “Serena, listen to me. It got out of control. Camille pushed the plan. Preston pressured me. I panicked. But I never wanted to hurt you.”
There it was: the practiced love, repackaged as regret.
“What did you want?” she asked.
“To build something with you.”
“With my signature.”
“With your trust.”
She almost laughed. “You keep using words after destroying their meaning.”
His breathing changed. “I can protect you. If this goes public in court, the foundation will bleed. Your mother’s name will be dragged through old accusations. Your father will look incompetent. Mia Keller will be turned into a headline until people hate her for being poor and visible. I can make statements. I can control damage.”
Serena understood then that this was not an apology.
It was another glass held out before the vows.
“What do you want, Julian?”
“Delay charges. Say you were overwhelmed. Say the drink issue was a misunderstanding until we all know what was in it. Give me time to leave the country before Preston starts trading evidence.”
“And Mia?”
“She’ll be compensated.”
The word snapped something clean inside Serena.
“She has a name.”
Julian’s voice hardened. “She is the reason your life is in pieces.”
“No,” Serena said. “She is the reason I still have one.”
She ended the call.
Across the room, the detective recording the conversation nodded. Mia stood beside him, arms folded, face unreadable.
Serena handed over the phone.
“He still thinks everyone can be priced.”
Mia looked at her. “Prove him wrong.”
May you like
Serena did not hesitate.
“I will.”
