Chapter 10 - Vivian’s Choice
Vivian faced a decision before trial.
Prosecutors offered reduced sentencing if she testified fully about Helena, Arthur’s poisoning, the kidnapping, and the financial conspiracy. She would still plead guilty to serious charges and likely spend years in prison.
Her attorneys advised cooperation.
Vivian asked to meet Clara.
Clara agreed only with Naomi and Detective Ortiz present.
The sisters sat across a steel table in a courthouse interview room. Vivian wore gray detention clothes. Without the emerald necklace, designer makeup, or wedding light, she looked younger and more tired.
“I did not know Mother planned to kill you,” Vivian said.
“You knew I was tied in a basement.”
“She said you would be released after the merger.”
“You visited the room.”
“I wanted you to sign.”
Clara did not allow language to become softer than the facts.
Vivian admitted she knew Helena poisoned Arthur. She had spent years telling herself he would have died soon anyway. After his death, Helena rewarded her with control of the company and called her the daughter strong enough to protect the family.
“What did she give you for protecting it?” Clara asked.
Vivian looked down.
“Nothing I could keep.”
She asked whether Clara remembered teaching her to swim.
Clara did.
Vivian had been seven, terrified of deep water. Clara held both hands beneath her back until she floated.
“I trusted you then,” Vivian whispered.
“And later you used that trust to get me into the greenhouse alone.”
Vivian began crying.
“I hated that Father chose you.”
“He chose the legal beneficiary of the work my mother created.”
“He loved you differently.”
The sentence revealed the wound beneath the crimes without excusing them.
Vivian believed love was a limited inheritance. Helena trained her to measure every room by who possessed more.
Clara refused to compete inside that measurement.
“I am not asking the court to punish you because Father loved me,” she said. “You will face what you chose.”
Vivian agreed to cooperate.
Her testimony would expose Helena’s orders, Malcolm’s forged documents, and the company directors who concealed debt. She surrendered access to offshore accounts and identified the remaining kidnapper.
Before Clara left, Vivian asked one question.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Clara thought of the blindfold, broken glass, and Vivian’s smile at the altar.
“I hope one day your apology no longer depends on what I give back.”
The cooperation agreement was signed that afternoon.
Vivian pleaded guilty to kidnapping conspiracy, attempted fraud, concealment in Arthur’s death, and financial crimes. Attempted-murder charges remained for the jury to determine based on her role.
Helena learned about the agreement from her attorney.
She sent Vivian one message through legal mail:
WEAKNESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN YOUR REAL INHERITANCE.
Vivian gave the message to prosecutors.
For the first time, she did not answer her mother.
