Chapter 07 - The Mother at the Border
Helena was arrested near the Vermont border.
A state trooper stopped a black SUV after recognizing the stolen license plate. Helena sat in the rear seat wearing a dark wig and holding Arthur’s medical box across her knees.
The driver was the second man from Clara’s kidnapping.
He reached for a weapon and was restrained.
Inside the medical box, investigators found Arthur’s original prescriptions, blood-test results, and a small bottle of digitalis that had never been prescribed to him.
Dr. Pike’s notes recorded worsening heart symptoms.
Independent lab reports showed Arthur’s blood contained unexplained concentrations of the drug three months before his death.
The final sample, taken on the day he died, had disappeared from the hospital archive.
Helena refused to speak.
Vivian requested a meeting with her mother after the arrest. Prosecutors allowed it under recording.
Vivian entered the interview room first.
“You said Clara would never reach the wedding.”
Helena sat across from her.
“You were supposed to sign the license before she arrived.”
“She walked through a ballroom covered in blood.”
“And you stood there smiling.”
Vivian’s expression collapsed.
For the first time, Clara saw the relationship clearly through the recording. Helena did not treat Vivian as a beloved daughter in danger. She treated her as an employee who failed.
Vivian asked whether Arthur had been poisoned.
Helena answered, “Your father’s heart was weak.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer you needed while you were useful.”
Vivian began to cry.
Helena remained still.
Prosecutors offered Vivian a chance to cooperate regarding Arthur’s death. She demanded immunity. They refused.
Clara watched the interview with Naomi.
Part of her wanted Vivian to turn against Helena. Another part recognized that truth offered only when profitable remained another negotiation.
The medical evidence strengthened the murder investigation but did not prove who administered the drug.
Then Rosa remembered Arthur’s nightly routine.
Helena brought him tea.
The greenhouse camera system had been removed after his death, but Arthur’s archive contained maintenance backups. Ethan located one drive labeled IRRIGATION.
Among water-pressure logs was a hidden video feed.
It showed Helena entering Arthur’s study with tea on the morning he died. Vivian followed carrying the merger documents. Arthur refused to sign.
Helena added liquid from a small bottle to the cup.
Vivian watched.
Arthur drank.
An hour later, he collapsed.
Vivian had not poured the poison.
She had remained in the room.
The video transformed the case.
Prosecutors charged Helena with murder and Vivian with conspiracy, concealment, and financial crimes related to Arthur’s death.
Vivian’s attorneys argued she did not know what the bottle contained.
A deleted message from Helena answered them:
AFTER THE TEA, HE WILL NOT STOP US AGAIN.
