The Video Tyler Could Not Delete

Chapter 04 - The Video Tyler Could Not Delete
At the hospital, doctors found no fracture, but Emily’s ankle required immobilization and the cut beneath her knee needed stitches.
Her wheelchair was taken as evidence before being sent for repair.
Daniel sat beside the bed while Maya explained what investigators recovered.
Tyler’s video began thirty-two minutes before the shove.
He and his friends stood near the pit discussing camera angles.
One boy asked whether the wheelchair might flip.
Tyler answered:
“That’s the point.”
Another suggested using a rope to pull it back if Emily became trapped.
Tyler laughed.
“Let her commissioner daddy buy a new one.”
They knew who Daniel was.
Tyler had pretended otherwise during earlier interviews.
The video also captured him reading a message from Robert Whitmore:
Keep her away from the lower path until Monday. Inspectors are coming.
Emily had been documenting the missing construction before a state accessibility inspection.
Tyler was not only trying to humiliate her.
He was stopping her from photographing the site.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
Emily stared at the ceiling.
“I told Principal Rowan he kept touching my chair.”
“I know,” Daniel said.
“No, you know now. I told her.”
The distinction landed.
Emily had not told Daniel every detail because she feared he would arrive as commissioner and make school life worse. She wanted Westbridge to respond through ordinary procedures.
Those procedures had failed.
Maya showed them another recovered clip.
Principal Rowan met Tyler near the gym before the assault.
She said:
“Your father needs the lower field clear. Handle your friends.”
The statement was ambiguous.
It did not explicitly order violence.
It proved she knew Tyler intended to confront Emily.
Rowan had then remained at the main festival for nearly fifteen minutes after a student reported shouting behind the gym.
The school’s inaction was beginning to look less like incompetence and more like protection.
The recovered group chat showed the boys testing names for the video during lunch.
Wheel Wipeout.
Mud Mobility.
Rolling Thunder.
Tyler chose the last one because he believed it sounded less openly cruel if adults discovered it.
One friend asked whether Emily’s father would arrest them.
Tyler replied:
Dad says commissioners leave schools alone when school boards control city contracts.
The message suggested the Whitmore family had spent years teaching Tyler how institutions traded influence.
Investigators later found Robert’s company bidding on police-building renovations, though no evidence showed Daniel favored the bids.
Daniel still asked the city to review every Whitmore contract independently.
Emily watched him sign the request.
“You don’t have to treat every connection like you did something wrong,” she said.
May you like
“I know. But people should not need to trust my intentions when records can answer the question.”
That reasoning became one of the first things they shared about the case rather than something Daniel decided for her.
