. CHAPTER 3 — The House with the Wrong Name

No one moved for three seconds. The kind of silence that followed was heavier than shouting. Rain tapped the tall windows. Somewhere in the mansion, hidden machinery hummed behind the walls. Olivia could feel every drop of water sliding down her neck, but she no longer felt cold. She felt awake.

Margaret straightened. “This is the Fairchild estate.”

“It was,” Olivia said.

Dean turned toward his mother. “What is she talking about?”

Margaret’s eyes darted toward Mr. Alden, the family trustee. He looked down at his napkin, suddenly interested in the embroidery. That was when Olivia knew he had never told them the full truth. Not yet.

The mansion had been called Fairchild House for almost a century, but names could lie. Three months before the divorce was finalized, a private holding company had quietly purchased the property debt attached to it. Two weeks later, every lien, every unpaid tax, every hidden mortgage Margaret had buried under social events and champagne dinners had been consolidated under one owner.

Olivia.

Not because she had wanted revenge at first. Her grandfather, Elias Hayes, had built one of the largest private logistics empires in the country before retiring under a different name. He had hated publicity. When he died, he left Olivia far more than Dean’s family ever imagined: companies, land, lawyers, and the patience to use them correctly.

At the time, Olivia had still hoped the Fairchilds might behave with dignity. So she had stayed silent. She bought the house to protect the staff from losing their jobs. She let Margaret continue hosting dinners because humiliation had never been Olivia’s hobby.

But cruelty had a way of signing its own eviction notice.

The double doors at the far end of the dining room opened.

Four men in dark suits entered first, followed by a calm older attorney carrying a leather folder. Behind them came Mrs. Vale, the house manager, her face tight with fury as she saw Olivia drenched and shivering.

Margaret’s mouth opened. “What is this?”

The attorney stepped forward. “Mrs. Fairchild, I am Thomas Keller, legal counsel for Hayes Meridian Holdings.”

Margaret went pale.

Olivia stood slowly. Ice slid from her dress and struck the floor.

Mr. Keller looked at her with concern. “Ms. Hayes, do you need medical attention?”

Olivia touched her stomach and breathed through the tremble in her knees. “The baby is moving. Call Dr. Rowan anyway.”

Dean stared as if seeing her for the first time.

May you like

“Hayes Meridian?” he whispered.

Olivia finally looked at him. “My company.”
