. CHAPTER 4 — Margaret’s Smile Disappears

Margaret recovered quickly, but not completely. Pride helped her stand tall; fear made her fingers shake.

“This is absurd,” she snapped. “My family has lived here for generations. You cannot walk in with bodyguards and pretend ownership because some pregnant little actress made a phone call.”

Mr. Keller opened the leather folder. “The property deed, transfer documents, and occupancy agreement are all valid. Fairchild House is held by Hayes Meridian Holdings. Mrs. Fairchild and approved guests have been allowed temporary residence under a courtesy agreement signed six weeks ago.”

“A courtesy agreement?” Dean said.

His mother shot him a warning look, but it came too late.

Keller continued. “The agreement included a conduct clause. Any act of harassment, assault, intimidation, or damage against the owner, her guests, staff, or property terminates occupancy immediately.”

One cousin quietly set down his glass.

Margaret forced a laugh. “You expect everyone to believe I assaulted her? I spilled water.”

Mrs. Vale stepped forward. “You ordered me to fill the bucket with ice, ma’am.”

Margaret turned on her. “You are staff. Remember your place.”

Olivia’s wet hand tightened against the back of the chair. “That sentence is exactly why I kept this house from foreclosure. The staff remembered their place better than any Fairchild ever did.”

Dean looked from Olivia to the attorney. “Foreclosure?”

Mr. Alden finally rose, gray-faced. “Dean, your mother borrowed against several family assets after your father died. The estate has been unstable for years.”

Margaret slammed a palm on the table. “Be silent.”

“No,” Olivia said. Her voice was soft, but it carried. “He should speak. Everyone should. For once, this room can tell the truth while sober.”

The insult landed. A few guests stared at Margaret’s untouched wineglass.

Dean’s face twisted with shame. “Mom, you told me Olivia was trying to take the house from us.”

“She was!” Margaret cried.

“I saved it,” Olivia said.

Security moved closer, not touching anyone, just becoming visible. The chandelier glittered above them all like a thousand cold eyes.

Keller handed Margaret a document. “Your license to occupy this property is terminated. You have one hour to gather personal belongings from your private suite. Anything else will be handled by movers under inventory.”

Margaret looked at the paper, then at Olivia’s drenched dress.

For the first time all night, she was the one who looked exposed.
