. CHAPTER 5 — The Son Who Chose Silence

Dean reached for Olivia’s arm, then stopped himself before touching her. His eyes were wet, but Olivia no longer knew whether that meant guilt, fear, or the shock of losing a life he had assumed would always forgive him.

“I didn’t know,” he said.

Olivia wanted to believe him. A year earlier, she would have. She would have accepted ignorance as an apology and loneliness as a reason. Tonight, water dripped from her sleeves onto the floor of a house she had saved alone, and the truth felt much simpler.

“You knew enough,” she said.

His face folded. “I didn’t know about the debts. I didn’t know she planned this.”

“But you knew how she spoke to me. You knew she called our baby a strategy. You knew she told people I trapped you. You heard it for months.” Olivia swallowed against the ache in her throat. “You never poured the water, Dean. You just made sure no one stopped her.”

He looked down.

Around the table, the guests pretended not to listen. They had listened to every insult when it entertained them. Now that truth made them uncomfortable, they found sudden interest in plates and napkins.

Margaret’s voice cut through. “Do not let her turn you against your family.”

Dean turned slowly. “You did that.”

Margaret blinked.

“You brought my pregnant ex-wife here under my name,” he said. “You told me signing papers would protect the baby. Then you humiliated her in front of people who have lived off our name while our accounts were empty.” His voice shook harder. “What else did you lie about?”

Margaret’s expression hardened. “Everything I did was to preserve this family.”

“No,” Olivia said. “You preserved the portrait. The family was already gone.”

Mrs. Vale returned with a towel and wrapped it gently around Olivia’s shoulders. That kindness almost broke her more than cruelty had. Olivia whispered thank you, gripping the fabric with numb fingers.

Keller stepped beside her. “Dr. Rowan is on the way. We can move you to the sitting room.”

Olivia nodded, then paused. “Not yet.”

She looked at Dean. “There is one more document you need to see.”

Keller hesitated. “Ms. Hayes—”

“It’s time.”

The attorney removed a sealed envelope from the folder. Dean stared at it as if it might bite him.

May you like

“What is that?” he asked.

Olivia’s eyes softened for one painful second. “The reason your mother wanted me gone before the baby was born.”
