. CHAPTER 2 — Under the Blue Silence

Underwater, sound became a nightmare.
Amelia could see shapes above her—the broken sunlight, the shadow of guests leaning over the pool, Vanessa’s white suit blurred like a ghost. Her lungs burned. Her dress tangled around her legs. She kicked once, but the fabric dragged her down again.
She had never been afraid of water before.
But she had never been eight months pregnant in a pool, fighting for two lives.
Her hands locked over her belly. The baby moved, a sudden frightened roll beneath her palms, and that tiny movement gave Amelia a burst of strength. She opened her mouth by accident and bubbles rushed out. Pain stabbed through her chest.
Not yet, she thought. Please, not yet.
Above her, Noah’s face appeared at the edge of the pool, distorted by the moving surface. His mouth was open, crying for her. His little hand reached toward the water, too far away to help.
Then he disappeared.
For one terrible second, Amelia thought everyone had left.
On the patio, chaos unfolded.
“Noah, get back!” one guest shouted.
“She fell!” another woman cried.
Vanessa raised both hands, playing innocent. “She lost her balance. I tried to catch her.”
Noah spun toward her, his face red with tears. “You pushed her!”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened. “You’re confused, sweetheart.”
“I saw you!”
The boy’s voice cracked so loudly that several guests turned. But Vanessa’s eyes hardened behind the sunglasses.
Before anyone else moved, Daniel burst through the garden gate in a black suit, tie loose, face drained of color. He had heard Noah scream once before like that—the day the boy’s mother died in a car accident. He knew the sound of a child watching someone vanish.
“Where is she?” Daniel shouted.
Noah pointed with both hands. “In the pool! Dad, she’s not coming up!”
Daniel did not hesitate.
He dropped his phone, kicked off one shoe, and ran. Vanessa stepped toward him as if to explain, but he brushed past her so hard she stumbled.
“Daniel, wait—”
He dove into the water fully dressed.
The splash broke the perfect silence beneath the surface. Amelia saw him coming through the blue, arms cutting forward, eyes wide with terror and focus. She tried to reach for him, but her body had begun to weaken.
May you like
Daniel caught her around the waist and pulled her upward.
For the first time since she fell, Amelia allowed herself to believe she might live.
