. CHAPTER 5 — The Footage in the Quiet Room

At the hospital, time stopped being measured in minutes.

It became measured in heartbeats.

Amelia lay in a white examination room while a nurse adjusted monitors around her belly. Daniel stood at her side, still in his soaked suit, refusing a towel, refusing a chair, refusing anything that would take his hand away from hers. Noah sat in the corner with a blanket around his shoulders, eyes swollen from crying.

The fetal monitor crackled.

A fast, tiny heartbeat filled the room.

Amelia covered her mouth. Daniel lowered his head, and for the first time since the pool, he broke. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just one breath that collapsed into grief and relief at once.

“She’s okay?” Amelia asked.

The doctor smiled gently. “For now, the baby’s heart rate is strong. We need to observe you closely, but this is a very good sign.”

Noah slid off the chair and ran to Amelia’s bedside. “She’s alive?”

Amelia reached for him. “Yes.”

He placed his small hand beside hers on her stomach. “I told her to stay.”

Daniel shut his eyes.

Then his phone rang.

It was Mr. Hale.

Daniel answered on speaker.

“I have the footage,” Hale said. His voice was low. “Officer Ruiz is here with me. Daniel, you need to see it.”

A file appeared on Daniel’s phone a minute later.

He did not want Amelia to watch, but she insisted.

The room became painfully quiet as the video played.

There was Amelia at the edge of the pool. Vanessa stepped close. No audio, only body language: Vanessa leaning in, Amelia trying to back away, Vanessa’s hands rising.

Then the push.

Clear. Deliberate. Both hands against Amelia’s shoulder and chest.

No slip. No accident.

The phone trembled in Daniel’s grip.

Noah turned his face into Amelia’s blanket. “I told the truth.”

Daniel knelt in front of him immediately. “Yes, you did. I’m sorry anyone made you feel like you had to prove it.”

Amelia looked at the frozen image on the screen—Vanessa’s hands on her body, the exact second her life changed.

“She wanted the baby gone,” Amelia whispered.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“No,” he said quietly. “She wanted you gone. The baby was just part of what she thought she could steal.”

At the mansion, Officer Ruiz watched the same footage.

When Vanessa saw it, all the performance left her face.

And the handcuffs came out.
